Gavin Hoffman enters his first year as a Terp assistant coach in 2026-27 after two years at Lock Haven University, first as a volunteer assistant and the second as an assistant coach. A 2022 NCAA D1 All-American, Hoffman brings with him an impressive resume after a six-year career competing at 197 pounds for Ohio State University.
Hoffman, who was a three-time NCAA Qualifier, had a Cinderella-run in 2022 and battled from the No. 21 seed to finish sixth with a 3-3 record to earn All-American honors. Following the 2022 season, Hoffman was named Ohio State's Most Improved Wrestler.
Hoffman competed at the Big Ten Championships during three seasons (2021-23), with his best season coming in 2022 where he placed eighth with a 2-3 record. In 2025, Hoffman qualified for NCAAs and finishing round of 12. He also placed fifth in the US Open freestyle and fourth in the World Team Trials in 2025. Hoffman was a U17 freestyle world bronze medalist in 2017.
After red-shirting during his freshman campaign, Hoffman immediately made his impact felt on the Buckeyes, as he racked up a career-high 26 wins during his first full season of competition.
Hoffman, who was a four-time member of the Big Ten All-Academic Team (2020-24), earned both his bachelor of science (operations management) and his masters degree at Ohio State University.
Native of Montoursville, Pennsylvania, Hoffman was a three-time Pennsylvania State Champion, including going an undefeated 45-0 during his senior season. Hoffman was an Amateur Wrestling News First Team All-American and graduated from Montoursville with an overall high school record of 176-9. He and his wife Michaela joined the Maryland family in spring of 2026.
