Hal Hunter is in his second season on the Maryland coaching staff and will serve as a Senior Offensive Assistant during the 2026 season.
During the 2025 season, Hunter worked primarily with Maryland's Tackles and Tight Ends. The Terps finished second in the Big Ten and fifth nationally by allowing just nine sacks on the year. Right tackle Alan Herron earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors and received an invite to the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine.
Hunter, who has over 40 years of coaching experience, worked in the NFL from 2006-2022, most notably serving as the San Diego Chargers Offensive Coordinator during the 2012 season.
Hunter spent seven seasons with the Chargers, helping the team to a 70-42 record during his time there, including an appearance in the 2008 AFC Championship game. San Diego’s offensive line garnered eight Pro Bowl selections from 2006-12 and the Chargers averaged 1,843 rushing yards per season during that time span. The line ranked ninth in the NFL in sacks allowed and the Chargers ranked second in the league with 119 rushing touchdowns during Hunter’s time in San Diego.
Hunter then spent three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts from 2013-15, first serving as the Assistant Offensive Line Coach before being elevated in 2015 to the Offensive Line Coach. Hunter helped Indianapolis reach the AFC title game in 2015.
Hunter then spent the 2016 season with the Cleveland Browns and the 2018 and 2019 season with the New York Giants, serving as Offensive Line Coach at both stops. He most recently was with the Houston Texans in 2022 as the Assistant Offensive Line Coach.
Prior to his time in the NFL, Hunter held positions at William & Mary, Pittsburgh, Columbia, Indiana (PA), Vanderbilt, LSU, Indiana and North Carolina.
As the Tar Heels' offensive line coach from 2002-05, Hunter mentored All-Atlantic Coast Conference standouts Jason Brown, Willie McNeill, Kyle Ralph and Jeb Terry.
Carolina's offensive line paved the way for more than 150 rushing yards per game in two of Hunter’s last three seasons. In 2004, the Tar Heels averaged 176.2 yards rushing per game, their highest mark since 1994, and were second in the league in total offense (390.7 yards/game).
Hunter graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in Communication Studies and Economics.
Hunter's father also coached in the NFL and was Maryland's offensive line coach from 1964-65 under head coach Tom Nugent.
