Jason Yellin serves as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications/Strategic Communications Officer for Maryland Athletics. Yellin rejoined the Maryland Athletic Department in December of 2019 after previously working at the school during the glorious era of Terp Athletics from 1998-2004. He oversees the department's strategic communications, content development, social media, website content and serves as the primary spokesperson for Maryland Athletics.
Yellin is a proven leader and team builder in sports media, strategic communications, branding and revenue generation for more than 25 years. He has a wealth of experience ranging from ESPN to multiple prominent NCAA Division I athletics programs and conferences. Yellin has demonstrated expertise in developing winning media strategies, clearly communicating goals and priorities, building a positive culture and developing content to tell stories connecting with various audiences. He is accomplished in developing and executing strategies to distribute sports media across various platforms.
In 2024, he was nationally recognized by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) for 25 years of excellence in service and exemplary work in college sports communications and supporting student-athletes.
In his role at Maryland, Yellin oversees the Strategic Communications and Content Development department. He is responsible for the development and execution of communication strategies that promote all 20 varsity sports programs. The position focuses on strategies to enhance and protect the brand reputation and overall mission of Maryland Athletics on a local, regional and national level. He manages a team of 12 staff members and dozens of interns and gameday staffers.
At Maryland, he has served as the Chair of the One Maryland Council leadership group. He has played a vital role in Maryland's content development and Name, Image and Likeness strategies, aiding to partner deals with Opendorse, Teamworks, SIDEARM Sports, PhotoShelter and others.
He also serves as a secondary sport supervisor for the Big Ten Champion Terrapin baseball program.
Yellin returned to Maryland from the Big Ten Conference office in Chicago, where he spend 2016-19 as the Assistant Commissioner for Communications. In that capacity, he served as a member of the senior staff directly overseeing the communications unit focused primarily on media relations, operations, social media efforts and the coordination of publicity for 14 member institutions and 28 official conference sports.
Prior to the Big Ten, Yellin was an Assistant Athletic Director and Media Relations Director with the University of Tennessee Volunteers from 2011-16. A member of the Senior Leadership Team, Yellin spent five years operating the media relations office in one of the premier athletic conferences in the nation, the Southeastern Conference. He also served as the primary public relations contact for its nationally-ranked football team, cultivating relationships with national publications, Internet and TV outlets. He was the primary liaison for Tennessee during the launch of the SEC Network in 2014.
Yellin also spent time at the University of Massachusetts as an Associate Athletics Director (2004-11), following his first tenure at Maryland (1998-04). While at Maryland, the Terps won the 2002 NCAA Men's Basketball Championships and appeared in three major football bowl games.
Prior to his time at Maryland, Yellin was a part of the launch of ESPN.com from 1996-98.
Yellin graduated from Stony Brook University and worked in the Seawolves' athletics department for eight years throughout high school and college.
Yellin and his wife Jen reside in Edgewater and have two children; Hailey, a 2023 graduate of Maryland, who works as a Video Producer for the 2026 Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes, and Quinn, a pitcher and Academic All-Big Ten selection on the Maryland baseball team.
