Sal Colangelo

Sal Colangelo brings more than three decades of experience in educational leadership, administration, coaching, and teaching. After serving 24 years as an activities director and administrator and six years as a physical education teacher, he continues to share his extensive leadership and athletic expertise with the University of Maryland.
Colangelo is entering his 28th season with the Bethesda Big Train organization. In his first year as manager in 2005, he guided the team to a Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League regular-season championship, followed by another first-place regular-season finish in 2006.
From 2009 to 2011, Colangelo led the Big Train to three consecutive Cal Ripken Collegiate League championships. During that span, the team was ranked the No. 1 summer collegiate baseball program in the nation by Perfect Game USA, surpassing more than 350 teams nationwide. For leading the Big Train to the 2011 National Championship, he was named Maryland State Amateur Coach of the Year by the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches (MSABC).
His success continued with five consecutive CRCBL championships from 2016 to 2021. In 2018, he led the Big Train to a franchise-record 34 regular-season victories and a league-record .850 winning percentage, earning MSABC Manager of the Year honors. His teams also captured CRCBL championships in 2023 and 2024. (The CRCBL did not compete in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.)
Over his tenure as manager, Colangelo has compiled a 664–238 regular-season record, a .731 winning percentage. He has guided the Big Train to 12 regular-season league titles and 11 Cal Ripken League championships. In addition to the nationally ranked No. 1 team in 2011, his 2009, 2017, and 2019 teams finished among the nation's top ten summer collegiate programs. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was inducted into the Cal Ripken League Hall of Fame in 2019 as a member of its inaugural class.
A graduate of Potomac High School in Woodbridge, Virginia, Colangelo retired as activities director at C.D. Hylton High School. Earlier in his career, he served as assistant activities director, assistant varsity baseball coach, and head golf coach at Potomac High School in Dumfries, Virginia. He also serves as a baseball instructor and regional director with Stars Baseball in Prince William County, Virginia, and Montgomery County, Maryland.
Before becoming Big Train's manager, Colangelo served as an assistant coach for the organization from 1999 to 2004. He was also an assistant baseball coach at Christopher Newport University from 1995 to 1997. A former student-athlete at Virginia Tech, Colangelo played both baseball and football from 1991 to 1995. He earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and holds master's degrees from Johns Hopkins University in Administration and Supervision and the United States Sports Academy in Athletic Administration.
Colangelo resides in Lorton, Virginia, with his wife, Alison, and their daughters, Emma and Abigail.
