Shawn Hendi was named Director of Student-Athlete Welfare at University of Maryland in September 2024. He spent the last 15 months as Health and Safety Coordinator for Systemwide Athletics for Montgomery County (Md.) Public Schools, launching an innovative sports medicine program staffing 25 athletic trainers – one at each high school. From 2008-2023, Hendi was employed at Georgetown University, first as the head athletic trainer in August 2008, then as Assistant Athletics Director and eventually promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Health and Wellness in 2017.

A native of Mount Airy, Md., Hendi graduated from The George Washington University in 1997 and received his Master of Science in health and human performance from Austin Peay State University in 1998.

Hendi spent two separate stints spanning six years (2000-2003 and 2005-2008) as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Maryland.

Hendi is currently a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association, and the Maryland Athletic Trainers' Association. A career advocate in the field of athletic training, Hendi was appointed to two terms on the Intercollegiate Council on Sports Medicine, was elected President of the BIG EAST Sports Medicine Society in 2012 and spearheaded the merger into the Alliance for Intercollegiate Sports Medicine, was named one of the top 50 assistant athletic directors by Silver Waves Media in 2021 and was selected to the Big East Health and Safety Working Group.

Hendi resides in Damascus, Md., with his wife, Jen, and his two daughters, Morgan and Camryn.
