Troy Wainwright has been a part of Maryland athletics for four decades. He is currently serving in the role of Managing Director, Development Priorities.
Wainwright first started at UMD on July 22, 1996 as the Director of Basketball Operations for Hall of Fame Coach and University of Maryland Alum Gary Williams. He was a part of 348 wins as part of the Men's Basketball staff as well as a member of the 2001 NCAA Final Four team (a first for Maryland) and the University's first Men's Basketball National Championship team in 2002.
He previously served as the Senior Associate Athletics Director of Stewardship and Alumni Relations.
In that role, Wainwright oversaw the stewardship of all major donors, Terrapin Club Scholarship Fund supporters and current and former student-athletes. Wainwright served as the athletic department’s major gift fundraiser, working with Senior Managing Director for Alumni Relations and Athletic Development Gary Williams on various initiatives.
Wainwright has worked in a myriad of roles at the University of Maryland. He also served as associate athletics director for major gifts from 2012-14. Prior to joining the Terrapin Club, Wainwright was executive director of the M Club and also was involved with the men’s basketball program where he served as the director of basketball operations for 15 years for Hall of Fame head coach Gary Williams.
Wainwright was an integral part of many of the men’s basketball programs accomplishments while he was on staff. He was a member of the staff for the 2002 national championship and 2001 Final Four team. Wainwright also was the director of the highly-successful Gary Williams Basketball Camps as well as tournament director of the Gary Williams Golf Invitational, which generated over $700,000 in donations, for the basketball program.
Wainwright earned four varsity letters while at Maryland as a student-manager for the basketball team from 1986-1990. In 1990, Wainwright was head manager for Williams.
After his time with the Men's Basketball team, Wainwright moved into the University's Athletics administration, first as the Executive Director of the M Club and then ultimately ascending to Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development. In January 2023, he moved over to Central Development as a Senior Director of Development and most recently back to Athletics as the Managing Director of Athletic Initiatives for the Terrapin Club January 2026.
The highlights of Wainwright's career at UMD include being a part of the first Final Four team in 2001, the first National Championship team in Men's Basketball in 2002, moving to the Big Ten in 2014, and raising funds to secure the building of the XFINITY Center, the Jones Hill House and the Barry Gossett Basketball Performance Center.
Wainwright earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Maryland University College in 2004. He went on to earn his Master’s of Science degree in Management/Marketing at UMUC as well, in 2008.
Wainwright treasures the friendships and connections he's made with many colleagues over the years, and is honored to have the chance to meet and mentor so many student-athletes and watch them matriculate into incredible people and successful contributors to the College Park community.
Wainwright comes from a family of Terps. His wife, Noelle, is a '96 grad. Their oldest son, Callum, graduated from the Architecture school in June 2025 and thier youngest son, Finnen, will attend UMD as a freshman in the fall.
