Tommy Gardiner heads into his second season as assistant coach after being promoted to the position ahead of the 2024 season. Before becoming an assistant coach he spent two seasons as Maryland's Director of Player Development after being named to the post in February of 2022. Gardiner previously played for the Terrapins from 2018-21. 

In his first year as an assistant coach, Gardiner helped lead the team to a 34-22 record. The 34 wins for the Terps are tied for the sixth-most in a single-season in program history. Freshman infielder Chris Hacopian earned Freshman All-American honors from Baseball America, D1Baseball, and Perfect Game after batting for a .323 average with 15 home runs and 42 RBI. Infielders Eddie Hacopian, Sam Hojnar, and Chris Hacopian earned All-Big Ten honors, with Eddie Hacopian and Sam Hojnar earning First Team All-Big Ten recognition and Chris Hacopian earning Second Team and All-Freshman Team honors.

In his first season on staff, the Terps' finished with the best record in program history at 48-14. Maryland earned the right to host an NCAA Regional for the first time in school history after earning the first nationals seed in program history (No. 15). The Terps also captured the 2022 Big Ten Regular Season Championship, their first conference title since 1971 and first outright conference title since 1965.

Gardiner played in 108 games for the Terps from 2018-21. In his final season, Gardiner batted .248 with four home runs and 29 RBI's, nearly tripling his career RBI total in the process. Gardiner was also a key fixture on the 2021 Terps team that went to its first regional since 2017, playing all over the infield before settling in at third base. 

Gardiner graduated from Maryland in December of 2021.
