Head coach Missy Meharg announced the hiring of Marvin Bam as an assistant coach in the summer of 2017.
Over the past two seasons with Bam as an assistant coach, the Terrapins made back-to-back runs to the NCAA Championship game, picked up eight wins over top-five teams and won the 2018 Big Ten regular season and tournament championships.
In his first year back in College Park, Bam helped lead the Terrapins to a remarkable run to the NCAA Championship game. After starting the year 6-5, the Terps won seven straight games, including four straight over top 25 teams, and 10 of 11 games to be one of the last two teams standing. They won at No. 2 Duke, to go to the Final Four, then beat No. 3 Michigan, 5-1 in the Semifinals, before falling to No. 1 Connecticut. The Maryland coaching staff was named NFHCA Mid Atlantic Region Staff of the Year.
In 2018, the Terps went 22-3, picking up 16 wins over ranked team, notching 13 straight wins to start the season, the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles and wins over No. 17 Albany, No. 5 UConn and No. 3 Princeton en route to the NCAA title game.
Bam brings over 20 years of experience as a player and a coach to College Park. In 2017, he served as an assistant at Harvard and helped the Crimson to its first Ivy League title since 2004.
He served as an assistant coach at Millersville in 2015 and 2016, guiding the Marauders to a 38-6 record during that span, as well as two NCAA quarterfinal appearances and an NCAA Division II national championship in 2014. Millersville players were honored with nine All-America honors in that span.
Prior to his stint at Millersville, Bam served as an assistant coach and technical director at Maryland 2012-13. On an international level, he has been an assistant coach for the USA Field Hockey Junior National U19 team since July.
Before that, he was the head coach at Cheltenham Ladies College in England for four years. On a club level, Bam is the master coach and co-founder of K16 Field Hockey. He is a certified Level 2 coach in the United States and United Kingdom.
As a player, Bam earned 98 international caps, competing in over 30 international tournaments. A native of South Africa, Bam represented his home country in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, as well as at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, the African Cup Championship and the Commonwealth Games. He has also played on various club teams in South Africa and in the United Kingdom.
Marvin's wife, Katie, is an associate head coach at Maryland.
