COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Heading into a senior campaign in which he could become the leading rusher in Atlantic Coast Conference history and challenge the top ten college running backs of all-time, Maryland tailback LaMont Jordan (Forestville, Md.) has been named a preseason first team All-American by eight major publications released through June.
In an informal survey including eight national preview magazines (Athlon, Blue Ribbon, College Football News, Football News, Lindy's, Playboy, Street & Smith's and The Sporting News), Jordan joined Michigan offensive lineman Steve Hutchinson and Wisconsin defensive back Jamar Fletcher as the only consensus first team selections.
Other consistent notables from among all eight lists were TCU running back Ladainian Tomlinson and Florida defensive lineman Alex Brown, both of whom were chosen to first, second or third teams in all eight publications. Tomlinson, a primary contender with Jordan for the coveted Doak Walker national running back award, was a first-teamer by six of eight publications and second team on two others. Brown was a second team selection only by Athlon.
Linebackers Keith Adams of Clemson and Jamie Winborn of Vanderbilt both were first team selections on all seven All-America teams to which they were chosen.
Others who were named to the first team on at least six of the eight lists were Miami wide receiver Santana Moss (7 teams, 6 first team selections), Arizona State tight end Todd Heap (7/6), Kansas State kicker Jamie Rheem (7/6), Texas defensive lineman Casey Hampton (7/6) and Mississippi State defensive back Fred Smoot (6/6). Four other players who drew first, second or third team mention in seven different publications were Minnesota offensive lineman Ben Hamilton (7/5), California defensive lineman Andre Carter (7/4), Nebraska linebacker Carlos Polk (7/4) and Clemson defensive back Robert Carswell (7/5).
Jordan rushed for 1,101 yards in the final six weeks of last season to finish his junior year with more yards than anyone in the country during their final six games of 1999. He needs just 91 yards to break Maryland's career rushing mark, 1,376 yards to establish a new ACC all-time standard, and 1,732 to move into the NCAA's top 10 career rushers. Jordan finished his junior season with 1,632 yards, 6.1 yards per carry and just one lost fumble in 288 touches.
