Most recently, the Greyhounds took a 10-8 decision during the 1989 season. Prior to that meeting, the two schools, which sit approximately 32 miles apart, had not played since 1959. The Terps won 18 consecutive games from 1940 through 1959.
TERPS ADVANCE TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND - AGAIN
Fifth-seeded Maryland will play No. 1 seeded Loyola in the NCAA semifinals on Saturday at Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway, N.J. The Terps defeated fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins, 11-10 in overtime, last Sunday in College Park to advance to the championship weekend for the third time in the last four seasons. Maryland has played in the championship game in two of the last three years and is looking to win its first national championship under head coach Dick Edell.
TERPS ESTABLISH SCHOOL RECORD FOR VICTORIES
Maryland defeated Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament to raise its record to 13-2. The 13 victories marks a school record for victories in a single season, surpassing the previous record of 12 by the 1987 and 1995 Maryland teams. All three Maryland teams which won at least 12 games advanced at least as far as the NCAA semifinal game, with the 1995 team reaching the NCAA championship game.

TERPS TO PLAY IN NATIONAL SEMIFINALS FOR 16TH TIME
Maryland has earned a trip to the national semifinals for the 16th time in the history of the NCAA Tournament and the third time in the last four years. The Terps will appear in the national semifinal game for the sixth time under head coach Dick Edell. Entering Saturday's game against Loyola, the Terps have won two consecutive semifinal games, with victories over third-seeded Syracuse (18-17) in 1997 and top-seeded Johns Hopkins (16-8) in 1995. Maryland has faced the tournament's top seed in the NCAA semifinals three times and holds a 2-1 record in those games.
TERPS IN THE NATIONAL SEMIFINALS
Maryland has an all-time 8-7 record in the semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland's current two-game winning streak in the semifinals is its longest since the Terps won four straight from 1973 through 1975. Maryland's 1974 semifinal victory over Cornell came at Rutgers University, the site of this season's championship weekend.

TERPS' CELEBRATING ANNIVERSARY OF 1973 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
Maryland arrives at Rutgers University this week to play in the championship weekend for the second consecutive season and also celebrate the 25th anniversary of its 1973 national championship. Maryland defeated Johns Hopkins, 10-9, in double overtime to claim their first of two NCAA Championships. The Terps would also claim the NCAA crown in 1975 as they defeated Navy.

MARYLAND VERSUS LOYOLA - A SERIES HISTORY
Maryland holds an 18-1 advantage in 19 previous meeting against Loyola. The teams have met only once since the 1959. Loyola won the last meeting between the two 'Old-Line' state schools, 10-8, during the 1989 season. The two teams met in consecutive seasons from 1940 through 1959. The only two years the two did not meet were in 1944 and 1945 when competition was stopped because of World War II.
TERPS DEFEAT JOHNS HOPKINS; ADVANCE TO NCAA SEMIFINALS
Midfielder Brian Zeller scored the game winning goal with 25 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to give fifth-seeded Maryland an 11-10 victory over fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins before a near-record crowd of 11,261 at Byrd Stadium on Sunday. Zeller scored his third goal of the day and 19th of the season after 3:35 seconds had elapsed in the first four-minute sudden-death overtime period. The unassisted goal came from the right side of the cage and bounced off Blue Jay defender Rob Doerr, goalie Brian Carcaterra and the post before making its way into the net. Zeller's goal capped off a wild game of runs and comebacks. After the Terps fell behind 4-2 in the first quarter, they scored seven of the next 10 goals to take a 10-6 lead at the end of the third quarter. After trailing 6-5 at half-time, the Terps outscored the Blue Jays 5-0 in the third quarter but Johns Hopkins but rallied in the four quarter, outscoring Maryland 4-0, to tie the game at 10-10. The game tying goal by Andrew Godfrey game with 1:51 remaining in regulation. Junior Brian Haggerty won the faceoff to begin the overtime period and Maryland was able to hold the ball until Zeller hit the game winning shot. The Terps took four high percentage shots before Zeller's shot found the back of the net. Junior Scott Hochstadt scored a game-high four goals while senior Matt Hahn scored three. Hahn has now accounted for at least one point in each of his 60 games as a Maryland player. In addition to his three goals, Zeller added two assists for a career-high five points.
EDELL NOW TIED AS WINNINGEST COACH IN ACC HISTORY
Maryland's victory over Johns Hopkins last Sunday gave Terps head coach Dick Edell 137 career victories at Maryland and moved him into a tie for first place with Jim Adams of Virginia as the winningest coach in ACC history. Edell's 137-61 record gives him a winning percentage of .692 - the second best in league history. Edell has averaged more than nine victories a season during each of his 15 years at Maryland.

1 Senior All-American Matt Hahn is the only player in school history to rank in the top 13 in single season goal scorers twice. His 36 goals during the 1995 season ranks as the 13th best all-time single season effort while his 44 goals this season is tied for the fifth best single season effort in school history.

Senior attackman Matt Hahn enters Maryland's NCAA Tournament semifinal game against Loyola with 144 career goals and is the all-time Maryland leader in goals scored. He broke the previous record as he scored four times against Butler in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He scored the record breaker with two seconds remaining in the first quarter to give Maryland a 5-2 lead. Wurzburger, who played from 1988-91, scored 137 goals during his career.

TERPS' WINNING THE ALL-CRUCIAL FACEOFFS IN THE PLAYOFFS
Led by junior Brian Haggerty, Maryland has won 65.9 percent of its faceoffs in its first two games of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Haggerty has won 31 of 47 faceoffs (65.6 percent) while junior Chris Nohe has won four total in the two games. Haggerty won one of the most important faceoffs of the season to begin the overtime period against Johns Hopkins in the NCAA quarterfinals last Sunday. The Terps were able to hold the ball for the entire period (while taking four shots) and scored the game winning goal with 25 seconds remaining in the period.

Senior Andrew Whipple has scored three goals and added seven assists for 10 total points during the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Whipple led the 1997 NCAA Tournament in scoring with 17 total points (seven goals and 10 assists). His is looking to become only the second player in NCAA Tournament history to lead the men's lacrosse tournament in scoring in two consecutive seasons. Former Syracuse All-American Tim Nelson led the 1983 (15 points) and 1984 (11 points) tournaments in scoring. Former Syracuse All-World Gary Gait led the tournament in scoring twice, but not in consecutive seasons. Gary Gait led the Tournament in scoring in 1988 and 1990 while his brother Paul led the tournament in scoring during the 1989 season.

HEALY MAKING HIS SECOND CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND APPEARANCE
Sophomore goalie Kevin Healy, the 1998 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, is making his second appearance in either the national semifinal or national championship weekend. Healy played the fourth quarter and recorded a season-high seven saves while allowing only three goals against Princeton in last years NCAA Championship game.
HEALY AGAINST THE ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE
Sophomore goalie Kevin Healy, the 1998 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, averaged 20.1 saves per game in his three regular season games (all victories) against Duke, North Carolina and Virginia. In leading the Terps to their first ACC Tournament title, Healy averaged 11 saves in two games against North Carolina and Virginia. He was unbeaten and had an outstanding .636 save percentage in five games against ACC teams. Each of the four teams which play ACC lacrosse all played in the 1998 NCAA Tournament.
SENIORS TO APPEAR IN 11TH NCAA TOURNAMENT GAME
Maryland's nine member senior class is unbeaten, 2-0, in NCAA Tournament semifinal games during their careers. The Terps defeated third seeded Syracuse, 18-17, to advance to the 1997 NCAA Championship game and defeated No. 1 seeded Johns Hopkins in 1995 to advance to the 1995 NCAA Championship game. Maryland's semifinal game against Loyola (Md.) will mark the 11th NCAA Tournament game for Maryland's seniors.

Only Mark Douglas (school-record 52) and Rob Wurzburger (44) in 1991 and Ron Martinello (47) and Peter Worstell (43) in 1981 have combined for more in a single season.
