
Maryland Men's Lacrosse Hands Out Annual Awards

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland men's lacrosse coach Dick Edell has announced the team's honorees from the 1999 season. Eight players, including five seniors, were given awards for their play during the 1999 campaign.
Van Trump Truitt Award (Outstanding Attackman): Scott Hochstadt - Hochstadt finished his Maryland career as the fifth all-time leading goal scorer with 121. He led the Terps in goals (30) and points (38) this past season and was named an honorable mention USILA All-American. He was named to the ACC All-Tournament team for the fourth consecutive year. Hochstadt also led the Jewish Sports Review All-America team in 1998 and 1999. Served as a team captain in 1999.
William Cole Memorial Award (Outstanding Midfielder): Jeff Shirk - One of the hardest hitters in the sport, Shirk has played in all 47 games during his career, including 14 this past season. As a junior, Shirk was the prototype short-pole defensive midfielder. He scored his only goal of the season against Virginia on Apr. 3. Shirk has been named a team captain for the 2000 season.
Deckman Silber Memorial Award (Outstanding Defenseman): Chris Lamy - Lamy had a stellar year on defense and was named a second team All-American as a senior. He scored his first three collegiate goals and finished with four points and 16 groundballs as a senior, starting all 14 contests. A 1999 captain, Lamy also played for the South in the North-South All-Star game this past summer.
Faber-Heagy Memorial Award (Unsung Hero): Jason Carrier - Carrier had a great season on defense, helping the Terps to a 8.29 goals against average. He picked up his first two college points on a pair of assists. He started all 14 games as a junior, and has played in every game over the last two seasons. Carrier has been named a team captain for the 2000 season.
Dan Snyder Memorial Award (Most Improved Player): Brian Haggerty - As a senior, Haggerty was Maryland's face-off specialist. He ranked among national leaders in face-offs won and face-off percentage over the past three seasons. Haggerty won 63 percent of his draws as a senior and scored twice to give him seven career goals and 15 career points. Won 499 of 892 face-offs over his four-year career. Haggerty served as a team captain as a senior.
Edwin Powell Memorial Award (Career Contribution): Erik Osberg - Osberg had his best season as a senior scoring six times and assisting on seven goals for 13 points. An emotional leader in the locker room, Osberg has a strong two-way player during his four years at Maryland. He scored 17 goals and assisted on 16 for a career total of 33 points.
Larry Levitt Memorial Award (Outstanding Freshman): Nate Watkins - Watkins was second among rookies in both categories with seven goals and nine points in 1999. He played for the United States Under-19 National Team this past summer.
Scholar-Athlete Award: Chris Nohe - Nohe was a strong performer on the field in face-offs and in the classroom. He played in 11 games as a senior and 49 in his career. He won 63 percent of his face-offs as a senior. He graduated with a 3.16 grade point average majoring in Management Sciences.
The University of Maryland's 2000 men's lacrosse schedule features games against nine teams ranked in the Top 20 of the final 1999 STX/USILA Men's Division I Lacrosse Poll. The Terps will also play host to the 2000 ACC Men's Lacrosse Tournament on April 21 and 23, and the NCAA Final Four, on May 27 and 29 for the eighth time in the last nine years. The Terps open the regular season on Feb. 27 against Mount St. Mary's.
