COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior tailback LaMont Jordan, whose record-setting season included the third-best performance ever by an Atlantic Coast Conference running back, Tuesday night was honored as the recipient of the Ray Krouse Memorial Award as the Terrapins' Most Valuable Player.
The presentation was made at the Inn and Conference Center during the Terps' annual football awards banquet.
Jordan, of Forestville, Md., last weekend put the finishing touches on the greatest season ever by a Maryland running back and one of the finest ever by an ACC performer. In rushing for a school-record 306 yards and two touchdowns last Saturday vs. Virginia, Jordan set a single-season Maryland rushing record (1,632 yards) and established single-season school bests for touchdowns (17) and rushing touchdowns (16). His rushing-yardage total is third-best in ACC history, behind only Virginia's Thomas Jones (1,798 yards in '99) and North Carolina's Don McCauley (1,720 in 1970). In addition, his 306 yards vs. the Cavaliers was the third-best single-game performance in ACC history.
In the latest NCAA statistics, Jordan ranks fifth in rushing yards per game (148.4), eighth in all-purpose yards per game (167.3) and tied for 12th in scoring (9.3). This past season, Jordan eclipsed the 100-yard rushing plateau seven times and the 150-yard mark six times. He also threw a 60-yard touchdown pass and had a 70-yard touchdown reception. Jordan was a two-time ACC Player of the Week. He also was named the Terps' offensive MVP.
Jordan will enter his final season next fall needing just 90 yards to reach the Maryland career rushing record. Defensive MVP honors went to senior tackle Delbert Cowsette, who shared the team lead in sacks (6). Cowsette, an 11-game starter, totaled 81 tackles, including 11 behind the line of scrimmage.
