COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Facing the final two games of their regular season, the Maryland Terrapins travel to undefeated and top-ranked Florida State this week for a game televised regionally on ABC-TV. Kickoff on Saturday in Tallahassee is 3:30 p.m.
Historically-speaking, it is Maryland's first matchup with the nation's No. 1-ranked team since falling to the 'Noles 49-20 at Byrd Stadium in 1993. Since AP polls began in 1936, it is the Terps' fifth meeting against the nation's top-ranked team, but the first such meeting on the road.
Next week (Nov. 20), the Terps host rival Virginia in a home finale that could have bowl implications for both schools.
The Terrapins, 5-4 overall after consecutive losses to Duke and NC State, still are seeking a sixth win to secure their first winning season since 1995 and qualify for postseason bowl eligibility. The Terps fell 30-17 at NC State last Saturday, in a game which proved more costly than just a loss in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings - starting quarterback Calvin McCall (Miami, Fla.) and inside linebacker Kevin Bishop (St. Petersburg, Fla.) both fell victim to knee injuries. While Bishop is definitely out for the season, McCall's injury will not require surgery. He has been ruled out of the FSU game and his status will continue to be evaluated.
Already young, the Terps will replace Bishop with another from their all-sophomore linebacking corps. Blue-chip freshman Latrez Harrison (Atlanta, Ga.) is expected to become Maryland's third freshman starting quarterback when he takes snaps in his fifth college appearance this Saturday. It will mark the 14th time in the last 16 games that Maryland has started a true or redshirt freshman as its quarterback.
The Jordan Watch
For the first time in four games, LaMont Jordan (Forestville, Md.) failed to reach 100 yards, but his 75 yards at NC State still were good enough to carry the Maryland junior past Charlie Wysocki (1981) with the third-best single-season rushing total (1,157) in Terrapin history.
One game after recording the ACC's best single-game effort of the year and the third-best ever by a Maryland runner (227 yards vs. Duke), Jordan scored on a 1-yard plunge against the Wolfpack to pull within one touchdown of tying Maryland marks for single-season TDs rushing (15), and overall (16).
He enters this week's Florida State matchup with five 100-yard games this season and 12 in his career. For the season, Jordan is 202 yards shy of the Maryland season record (1,359) set by Charlie Wysocki as a junior in 1980. He is 104 yards shy of Steve Atkins' No. 2 mark of 1,261 in 1978.
Career-wise, Jordan's 2,752 yards are 219 shy of Steve Atkins (2,971 from 1975-78) in second and 565 behind record-holder Charlie Wysocki (3,317 from 1978-81).
Compared with ACC rushing standards, Jordan is just 240 yards shy of the league record for single-season rushing yards by a junior, established in 1995 by Virginia's Tiki Barber (1,397). He is 248 yards shy of 3,000 in his career to make him only the fourth player in ACC history ever to reach the plateau as a junior.
He currently averages 128.56 yards per game, second in the ACC and eighth in the nation. His 150.67 all-purpose yards are 15th in Division I-A and his 10.0 points per game are tied for seventh in the country.
Records
Maryland is 5-4 overall and 2-4 in the ACC following its 30-17 loss at NC State. Florida State, meanwhile, is 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the ACC. The Seminoles, having already clinched their eight consecutive ACC championship, are one of just five unbeaten teams in the country.
Rankings
Two Terp opponents are ranked in this week's national college football polls: Florida State (#1 AP, #1 ESPN/USA Today) and Georgia Tech (#13, #14). Overall, five of nine schools in the ACC received votes in one national poll or the other, with Clemson and Virginia receiving votes in both polls. NC State received votes in the ESPN/USA Today poll. Complete polls are listed on page 8.
Snapping a string of seven consecutive weeks since a 33-0 win over West Virginia, Maryland did not receive votes in this week's ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Terps have received AP votes in five of eight weeks. It marks the first time that Maryland has received votes in national polls since 1995.
Terrapin coach Ron Vanderlinden is one of 62 voting members of the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Top 25 Poll.
Terp Coach Ron Vanderlinden
Terrapin head coach Ron Vanderlinden (Albion College '78) is in his third season at Maryland after helping rebuild struggling programs at Colorado (1983-91) and Northwestern (1992-96). He is 10-21 as a college head coach, named the Terps' field boss in December of 1996.
Vanderlinden, 43, arrived in College Park after a five-year stint as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator under Gary Barnett at Northwestern where the Wildcats won a pair of Big Ten championships and a 1996 Rose Bowl appearance. As defensive line coach in nine seasons under Bill McCartney at CU, the Buffaloes won the 1990 national championship, three Big Eight titles, and six bowl games.
Counting two years at Michigan, Vanderlinden has coaching experience in 10 major bowl games.
Vanderlinden's teams at Maryland have been characterized by vast improvements made to the rushing game and the overall defense. In 1998, Maryland was the sixth-most improved rushing team in America, and among the top 15 most improved teams in the country in total, scoring and pass defense.
Vanderlinden is 0-2 against Florida State and Bobby Bowden.
FSU Coach Bobby Bowden
Florida State boss Bobby Bowden (Samford '53) is the fifth Division I-A coach ever to record 300 victories. He is 301-85-4 in his 33rd season overall and 228-53-4 in his 24th campaign in Tallahassee. Second among active coaches behind Penn State's Joe Paterno (316), he is the only coach in college history to post 12 consecutive 10-win seasons. Bowden has guided the Seminoles to eight straight ACC titles.
Injury Report
Starting quarterback Calvin McCall (Miami, Fla.) and inside linebacker Kevin Bishop (St. Petersburg, Fla.) both suffered knee injuries at NC State. MRI examinations on Sunday confirmed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Bishop's left knee and a complete isolated tear of the medial collateral ligament in McCall's left knee. Bishop's injury requires surgery and will sideline him for the remainder of the season. McCall's injury will not require surgery though he has been ruled out of the Florida State game. His status will continue to be evaluated.
Junior receiver Jason Hatala (Centreville, Va.) broke his right pinkie finger in practice last week and missed the NC State game. His return for the Florida State game is questionable.
Strong safety Tony Jackson (Ellicott City, Md.) remains out with a broken left ankle suffered in the Temple game. He began practicing last week, but his status remains questionable.

Maryland Sports Rank 24th
During the 1998-99 athletic year, Maryland sports teams finished in the top 25 in national all-sports competition for the Sears Directors' Cup. It marked the second straight year that the Terps have boasted a top 25 ranking in standings released by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Maryland's highest finish was 19th, two years ago. The Terps have risen steadily in their climb among the nation's elite, finishing 57th during the program's first year under the guidance of Deborah Yow in 1994-95. The Terps finished 36th and 32nd before their breakthrough year in '97-98.
Only six schools among the top 25 Sears Cup institutions averaged fewer operating dollars per sport than the Terps. Maryland's broad-based athletics program comprised 24 sports for the 1998-99 ranking. A 25th, women's golf, has been added for fall 1999.

LAST WEEK'S GAME
NC State 30, Maryland 17
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Jamie Barnette threw for two touchdowns to set an Atlantic Coast Conference record and Kent Passingham kicked three field goals as North Carolina State beat Maryland 30-17.
Barnette, playing in his final home game and passing 23 of 37 for 324 yards, moved to the top of the ACC career touchdown passing list with 59, two more than Florida State's Danny Kannell.
Barnette's second TD pass gave the Wolfpack (6-4, 3-4 ACC) a 24-10 lead with 11 seconds left in the first half. Barnette was flushed out of the pocket before throwing to the end zone to a wide-open Andy Vanderveer.
NC State increased its lead to 30-10 with 2:33 to go in the third quarter after Passingham kicked field goals of 26 and 31 yards on consecutive possessions.
Maryland (5-4, 2-4), on the verge of its first winning season since 1995, cut the lead to 30-17 on LaMont Jordan's 1-yard touchdown run with 12:12 left in the game. Jordan, Maryland's top rusher with an average 135.3 yards per game, was held to 75.
After swapping the lead twice early, the Wolfpack went ahead 17-10 on Ray Robinson's 1-yard touchdown run with 3:18 to go in the second quarter.
Maryland led 7-0 when NC State's Rahshon Spikes fumbled on the first play of the game and Tony Okanlawon carried the loose ball 21 yards for a touchdown.
Barnette got NC State into the game by capping a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a 23-yard scoring pass to Chris Coleman. After Passingham's 27-yard field goal with 13:53 left in the second quarter, the Terrapins moved inside the NC State 20, but settled for Brian Kopka's 31-yard field goal to tie the score at 10-10 with 9:12 to go in the half.

LAST YEAR VS. FLORIDA STATE
(9) Florida State 24, Maryland 10
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - After Florida State took the opening kickoff and moved 69 yards in six plays for a 7-0 lead with ease, it appeared evident that a Seminoles' rout of Maryland was underway. But not this time. The opening score turned out to be the only touchdown for the ninth-ranked Seminoles, who overcame a pair of turnovers and a stiff Maryland defense to squeeze out a 24-10 victory.
Sebastian Janikowski kicked five field goals and Chris Weinke passed for 261 yards for FSU, but the game hardly resembled the previous six meetings between these teams that have been decided by an average of 39 points over the last six years.
The Seminoles (4-1, 2-1 ACC) scored on their first four possessions but led only 16-10 at halftime. Buoyed by growing confidence, the Maryland defense held the Seminoles from scoring in six of their final eight possessions.
The Seminoles amassed 111 yards in penalties and Peter Warrick lost two fumbles on punt returns. Maryland (2-3, 0-2) also denied FSU on 10 of 19 third-down situations. Were it not for Janikowski, whose five field goals tied a school record, Florida State would have been in deep trouble. Janikowski connected from 27, 47, 48, 23 and 36 yards and missed from 47.
A 14-yard touchdown pass from Randall Jones to Moises Cruz put Maryland on the scoreboard and a 24-yard field goal from Brian Kopka pulled the Terrapins within six. The Terrapins were still within eight points late in the third quarter despite a Jones fumble in the end zone for an FSU safety.
Florida State eventually wore down Maryland behind tailback Jeff Chaney, who gained 133 yards on 30 carries in his first college start. Janikowski's fourth field goal staked the Seminoles to a 21-10 lead and his fifth made it 24-10 with 11:01 left. Maryland recovered Warrick's second fumble with 7:12 remaining at the FSU 32, but could not score.
