RICHMOND, Va. - Postgame comments from Maryland women's basketball coach Chris Weller after the Terps' dominating 86-66 win over Richmond on Monday.
On the Richmond game: "This was a great team effort for us. [The players] are excited. It was a game we were a little apprehensive about because it's exam week and our first road game. We were a little worried about distraction and fatigue, but we came in very focused. We've been concentrating on the concept of 'team' and I really think it showed tonight. They were totally unselfish in their play."
On turnaround from last year: "Last year was really an odd year. It was really atypical. Our only two experienced players missed the first semester and then we got them back. But by the time they made it back, we were right into the ACC and the whole league was ranked in the top 15 last year. We got close in games, but they weren't games we could win. I don't think we're going to be a dynamite team this year, but we're competitive and we're going to be in every game. We feel this is the second stage coming back from last year. I think we're going to be very strong next year. I still think we need another year to make these freshmen comfortable with the game. Maybe we could surprise me, and maybe we can be a contender this year, that would be nice. We'd like to think we can make the national tournament this year, but I really think next year we'll be strong."
