COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior tailback LaMont Jordan (Forestville, Md.) added to the list of All-America honors he has received since the conclusion of his record-setting season by being named third team All-American by The Sporting News.
Jordan was joined on the third team by Terrapin defensive back Lewis Sanders (Staten Island, N.Y.). Maryland also had two representatives on the Freshman All-American team -- second-team offensive tackle Matt Crawford (Moravia, N.Y.) and third-team punter Brooks Barnard (Arnold, Md.).
Jordan finished fifth nationally in rushing yards per game (148.4 ypg) in 1999. He established game (306 vs. Virginia) and season (1,682) rushing-yardage records, and is just 91 yards shy of rewriting Maryland's career rushing-yardage standard. He rushed for 100 yards or more seven times in 1999 in addition to setting single-season school records for touchdowns (17) and rushing touchdowns (16).
Sanders ranked among the NCAA leaders in kickoff return average and interceptions for most of the season, finishing 11th nationally in picks and 12th nationally in kickoff return average. He scored a pair of touchdowns in '99, one on a 98-yard kickoff return and the other on a 28-yard fumble return. He led the ACC in interceptions and was among the league leaders in pass breakups.
Crawford was an 11-game starter on an offensive line that paved the way for No. 1 ACC rankings in rushing yardage (231.4) and fewest sacks allowed (11). The Terps finished 12th nationally in rushing. Barnard, who took over the starting punting chores in the fifth game of the season, punted for a 42.1-yard average, the highest by a Terp in six years.
