TERPS COMING ON STRONG: In its past three meets, the Terrapins have placed no lower than seventh after finishing no higher than 13th in its previous two meets. At the Pepsi Intercollegiate Classic at Bradford Creek, the Terps finished 3-under par, the only time they have finished under par this season, and took first place overall. It was the first time they have placed first in two years and was also their lowest score in two years. At their next meet, the Terps tied for seventh place out of 26 teams at the Furman Invitational. In this past weekend's meet at the Cleveland Golf/Augusta College Invitational Tournament, Maryland finished third out of 10 teams.
JUNIOR-SOPHOMORE COMBINATION IS DEADLY: Maryland's leaders this season have been junior Miguel Rivera and sophomore Keith Unikel. They are two of the three Terps who have competed in every meet, the other being junior Mike Deo. Unikel finished in a tie for fourth-place at this past weekend's tournament with a 1-under par score of 215. This was the third time that Unikel had shot under par this season and his score also included a 1998 team low round score of 68. Unikel also finished in a tie for 15th at the Pepsi Intercollegiate Classic. Rivera has been equally impressive this season. In this past weekend's meet, Rivera finished in a tie for 15th with a five-over-par performance score of 221.
In the Pepsi Intercollegiate Classic, Rivera tied for 10th overall, finishing 1-under par with a season-best score of 215. Rivera and Unikel also seem to be competing with each other as Unikel has just six less strokes than Rivera this season and has a round low score of 68, compared to Rivera's round low score of 70. Both golfers have shot under par three times, while Rivera has shot even par twice and Unikel has shot even par once. Unikel's average of 74.13 is also slightly better than Rivera's average of 74.53.
RECAP OF THE PAST WEEK: This past weekend in Augusta, Ga., at the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational, the Terrapins golf team recorded a team total score of 886 to finish 22 above-par and take third-place. Their team score consisted of scores of 293, 300 and 293 in each of the three rounds. Winning the tournament was Augusta State which finished 3-over par with a score of 867 and Virginia Commonwealth placed second with a 14-over par score of 878.
