Men's Lacrosse 7-0 First Quarter Buries Cornell

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 7 Maryland men's lacrosse team busted out to a 7-0 first quarter lead and never looked back as the Terps recorded an 11-6 win over No. 13 Cornell at Byrd Stadium before 3,538 on Saturday. Maryland's scoring came at fast pace to open the game as the Terps (4-1) were up 3-0 just 3:36 into the game after a goal by senior Scott Hochstadt (Columbia, Md./Boys' Latin), and a pair from junior Brian Zeller (Forest Hill, Md./Loyola).
Both Zeller and Hochstadt finished the day with three goals, and are first and second on the team in goals with 14 and 10, respectively. Hochstadt continued to write his name into the Maryland record book as he scored his 100th career goal to close the first-quarter onslaught with four seconds left. Hochstadt became the 10th player in Terrapin men's lacrosse history to crack the 100-goal plateau. Hochstadt also moved into the top 20 in all-time point scoring with three today. In his four-year career, Hochstadt now has 129 points to rank in a tie for 19th all-time with Pat O'Mealley, who played at Maryland from 1971-74.
Two Terps scored their first college goals. Junior defenseman Jason Carrier (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and freshman attacker Nate Watkins (Elmira, N.Y./Horseheads) got into the scoring column for the first time for Maryland. Sophomore attacker Andrew Buggs Combs (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) added a pair of goals in the win and attacker Marcus LaChapelle (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) added two more assists to raise his team-high total to 11.
Cornell (2-2) played a strong game in the second and third quarters, outscoring Maryland 5-1 over the periods and cut the Terps' lead to 8-5 with 5:32 left in the third quarter on a goal by Andrew Schardt (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). Attacker Josh Morgan (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scored two goals in the second quarter, when the Big Red outscored Maryland 3-1.
The Terps return to action this Tuesday, March 23 against another Ivy League opponent, Dartmouth. The game will face-off at 4 p.m. at Byrd Stadium. It will also pit father against son as Maryland's head coach Dick Edell leads the Terps against the Big Green and
