No. 1 Women's Lacrosse is Upset

March 6, 1998

DURHAM, N.C. -- The No. 1 ranked Maryland women's lacrosse team dropped its first loss in Atlantic Coast Conference play since its inception while the Duke Blue Devils won their first-ever ACC match. It was Maryland's first loss since its April 22 loss to Loyola in 1997 and broke its seven-game winning streak. It was the opening match of the 1998 season for the Terps.

Seniors Noelle Mitchell and Cathy Nelson each scored two goals while freshman Meredith Egan and sophomore Kristin Sommar added one goal apiece. The Terps trailed at the half before coming back but could never shut down the Duke attack.

Sophomore goalie Alex Kahoe recorded 10 saves on the evening.

Maryland travels to North Carolina for a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday with the Tar Heels.

The Terps are 0-1 in the ACC.
