MARYLAND ONE OF FIVE TEAMS COMPETING IN THE BUBBLE INVITATIONAL: This Saturday, the Terrapins will travel to Raleigh, N.C., to compete in the Bubble Invitational at N.C. State. Also competing will be William & Mary, Central Michigan, James Madison and host N.C. State. The meet marks the first time that Maryland will be facing William & Mary and Central Michigan this season. The Terrapins lost to N.C. State at the Governor's Cup by a score of 192.125 to 191.700 and defeated James Madison in its second meet of the season by a score of 184.900 to 182.500.
1997 BUBBLE INVITATIONAL: At last year's Bubble Invitational, which featured host N.C. State, George Washington, William & Mary and Radford, Maryland finished third out of the five teams. The Terrapins took third-place with a score of 190.350, finishing behind N.C. State (195.475) and George Washington (192.575).
TERPS PLACE THIRD AT BERMUDA INVITATIONAL: At the Bermuda Invitational in Southampton, Bermuda this past Friday, Maryland scored a 189.300 to place third behind East Atlantic Gymnastics League rivals Towson (191.850) and New Hampshire (190.725). Leading the way for the Terps was senior Megyn Byrnes (Mahopac, N.Y. / Mahopac), who finished third in the all-around competition with a score of 37.850. Byrnes tallied scores of 9.450 on vault, 9.125 on bars, 9.675 on beam and 9.600 on floor, and her score on beam earned her second-place.
ENGEL ON A TEAR: Junior Jenny Engel (Monrovia, Md. / Linganore) has stepped up her game and filled in successfully for the injured Stacy Breidenbach as the Terps have gone 6-4 over the past three meets. At the Towson Invitational, Engel set season-highs on vault (9.650), beam (9.600) and floor (9.725). Her score on floor earned her third-place and marked the Terrapin 1998 season-high. In the next meet against host George Washington, Eastern Michigan and Radford, Engel broke two season-highs as she scored a season-high 9.650 on beam and a season-high 9.775 on floor. Engel's mark on floor also set a new Terrapin 1998 season-high and placed her second. In the Bermuda Invitational, Engel competed in the all-around for the first time this season and scored a season-high 36.775.
TERPS IN THE RANKINGS: After nine meets, the Terrapins are ranked 37th in the country, eighth in the Southeast Region and sixth in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League, according to the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastic Coaches Poll. Individually, senior Stacy Breidenbach is ranked 18th in the Southeast Region for all-around average, senior Megyn Byrnes is ranked 20th, junior Christine Holcombe is ranked 26th and freshman Karyn Fein is ranked 33rd. In the EAGL, Breidenbach is ranked seventh, Bynres is ranked 10th, Holcombe is ranked 17th, and Fein is ranked 22nd.
