COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland freshmen Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuykill Valley) and Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) brought the Terps out of the starting gate with two wins, but a core of Virginia veterans remained solid to give the visiting Cavaliers a 23-13 win in Ritchie Coliseum.
After a random draw to begin the match at 157 pounds, Stork scored a major decision on Kevin Sullivan after building his 10-point lead with consistent scoring. Aquia followed the victory with one of his own, edging Cavalier sophomore Greg Francesca, 9-4. Virginia, however, responded with 20 straight team points.
At 174, two-time ACC champion Jim Harshaw gained a technical fall on Maryland's Chad Masemer (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) by a score of 17-1. The win was followed by a decision from Ryan McGrath at 184, a pin by junior Craig Fenstermaker at 197 and two more close wins by Ryan Painter at heavyweight and Matt Roth at 125.
Down 20-7, the Terps rallied with wins from redshirt freshmen Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) and freshman Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J./Hillsborough) to bring the score within ten, but John Pozniak of Virginia closed out the match with a 6-2 decision.
Virginia improves to 8-5-1 overall and 2-2 in the ACC as Maryland falls to 5-4, 2-2 in the ACC. The loss drops the Terps to third place in the ACC behind first place North Carolina and the Cavaliers.
Maryland's next dual match is this Friday night, February 19 when the host Howard at 7:00 p.m. They close out the regular season on Sunday against Old Dominion at 2:00 p.m. in Ritchie Coliseum.
