COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland wrestling head coach Alex Clemsen announced the hiring of Gavin Hoffman as an assistant coach on Friday afternoon.
Clemsen said, "We're really excited to announce the addition of Gavin Hoffman to our staff. Gavin was a proven competitor in the Big Ten at Ohio State, one of the elite institutions in our league. He has also spent the last two years being mentored as a young coach by one of the best leaders in wrestling, Scott Moore, at Lock Haven. I know Gavin and his wife, Michaela, are excited to get to College Park and help Maryland Wrestling continue to climb."
Hoffman arrives in College Park following one season at Lock Haven, where he helped lead the Bald Eagles to a 13-5 overall record and a 6-1 mark in the MAC. He assisted in guiding the team to a second-place finish at the MAC Championships, coaching two individual conference champions and four NCAA qualifiers.
Prior to his time on staff, Hoffman was named a volunteer assistant at Lock Haven in the fall of 2024. A 2022 NCAA Division I All-American at 197 pounds, Hoffman brings an impressive résumé following a six-year career at Ohio State.
A two-time NCAA qualifier, Hoffman made a memorable Cinderella run at the 2022 NCAA Championships, advancing from the No. 21 seed to finish sixth and earn All-American honors with a 3-3 record. Following that season, he was named Ohio State's Most Improved Wrestler.
Hoffman competed at the Big Ten Championships in three seasons (2021–23), with his top performance coming in 2022 when he placed eighth.
After redshirting his freshman year, Hoffman made an immediate impact for the Buckeyes, recording a career-high 26 wins in his first full season of competition.
A four-time member of the Big Ten All-Academic Team (2020–24), Hoffman earned both his Bachelor of Science in operations management and his master's degree from Ohio State.
A native of Montoursville, Pennsylvania, Hoffman was a three-time Pennsylvania state champion, including an undefeated 45-0 senior season. He was also named an Amateur Wrestling News First Team All-American and graduated with an outstanding high school record of 176-9.
