COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three Maryland women's basketball players were named today to Atlantic Coast Conference all-league teams, just two days before the Terps play the opening game of the 22nd Annual ACC Tournament, Friday in Charlotte, N.C.
Freshman Deedee Warley (Fort Washington, Md.) received 55 votes while being named to the All-Freshman Team. She was just two votes shy of Georgia Tech guard Niesha Butler who was unanimously voted to the All-Freshman Team on all 57 ballots. Warley averages 13.4 points and 5.8 rebounds for Maryland, and is just the fourth freshman in Terp history to lead the club in scoring. She has scored in double figures 18 times this season.
Warley's naming to the All-Freshman Team marks the fifth time in six seasons that Maryland has posted a player on the All-Freshman Team, including current teammates Tiffany Brown in 1997 and Kelley Gibson (Easton, Md.) in 1996.
Gibson, now a senior, was named an honorable mention all-conference recipient alongside junior center Branka Bogunovic (Zemun, Serbia).
Gibson trails Warley on the Maryland scoring chart with a 12.4-point scoring average while climbing Maryland career lists in scoring, 3-point field goals, assists, steals and blocked shots. She also is second on the team and ranked among ACC leaders with 4.2 assists per game.
Bogunovic earned her first ACC honors after arriving in the United States three years ago as an unheralded six-foot-eight product of the Yugoslavian Junior National Team. Seeing playing time increased to an average of 23.2 minutes per game this season, Bogunovic has started 21 games for the Terps while scoring 11.7 points with a team-leading 7.1 rebounds. She has recorded eight double-doubles in her junior campaign including a 22-point, 16-rebound effort in last Sunday's 92-79 win over Georgia Tech.
