NCAA to Conduct a Free Youth Gymnastics Clinic at UCLA

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Some of the nation's most successful collegiate gymnastics coaches, including Maryland head coach Bob Nelligan, and student-athletes will be on hand when the NCAA conducts a youth clinic on Saturday, April 18, at the University of California, Los Angeles. Boys and girls ages 10-18 are eligible to participate at no cost to them. Pre-registration is required. Registration for the clinic begins at 7:30 a.m., with sessions lasting until 2:15 p.m.

The clinic is part of the NCAA Youth Education through Sports (YES) program and is being conducted in conjunction with the NCAA National Collegiate Gymnastics Championship. The clinic will provide youth programming with focuses on participant development and the student-athlete mentoring program. YES clinic participants will discuss with student-athlete topics such as academics, goal-setting, developing mental skills and transferring what they learn in sports to other areas of their lives. These special presentations will be specifically geared to the ages of the participants.

Each participant will receive a YES T-shirt, printed materials regarding gymnastics and gymnastics skill development, and enrichment topics.

The program will feature the following top collegiate coaches: Bob Nelligan, Maryland; Paul Beckwith, Cornell, Tina Bird, Boise State; Kris Buchheister, Southeast Missouri State, Bobbie Cesarek, Northern Illinois; Derek Galvin, North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Barbara Gibson, Wisconsin, La Crosse; Kim Hughes, Cal State, Sacramento; Julie Knight, Cal State, Fullerton; and Eduardo Ovalle, MIT.

Parents will have the opportunity to discuss with clinic staff issues regarding youth sports. Additional topics relative to recruiting and admission requirements for collegiate student-athletes will also be discussed.

The NCAA is a membership organization of colleges and universities that participates in intercollegiate athletics. The primary purpose of the Association is to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the educational program and the athlete as an integral part of the student body. Activities of the NCAA membership include formulating rules of play for NCAA sports, conducting national championships, adopting and enforcing standards of eligibility and studying all phases of intercollegiate athletics.
