Western Michigan Uses Nine 3-Pointers to Overcome Career Night by Bogunovic

December 3, 1998

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Seeking its first victory in five games, Maryland succumbed to Western Michigan's quick-striking, 13-0 second half run, and nine 3-pointers, as the Broncos overcame a 10-point deficit to down the Terps 64-55 in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday.

Maryland, which got a career-high 32 points from 6-foot-8 center Branka Bogunovic, led by 10 on a Bogunovic layup with 10:27 to play. The Broncos, however, reeled off 13 unanswered points in the next three minutes. Shelsea Erving scored six of her team high 21 points on a pair of 3-pointers, and Brianne Gallert scored five during the run as Maryland (0-5) found itself trailing, 45-42, with 7:27 to play.

Kelly DeLong netted WMU's final 3-pointer with 3:58 remaining to stake the Broncos (4-1) to a seven-point advantage, 56-49. Freshman March Strickland scored on a driving jumper, and Bogunovic scored her final basket at the 1:47 mark to cut the lead to three, but Maryland never got closer.

Bogunovic shot 16 of 22 from the floor, and added 12 rebounds for the Terrapins as Maryland outrebounded its opponent for the fifth straight game. Her 32 point-effort was the highest scoring production by a Maryland player since Dafne Lee's 39 points at Wake Forest on Feb. 16, 1990 tied the school record. It matched the seventh-best scoring effort in Maryland history.

The Terps shot 59 percent from the floor during the second half, and 48 percent for the game - compared to just 33 percent by the Broncos. WMU hit nine 3-pointers compared to Maryland's zero, and used 21 Terp turnovers to create 71 field goal attempts and record its fourth straight victory.

DeLong added 12 points for the Broncos and Gallert scored 10. Deedee Warley pitched in 10 points for Maryland while Antonieta Gabriel contributed nine rebounds and 10 assists.

Maryland travels to No. 25 Clemson on Saturday to begin play in the Atlantic Coast Conference at 7 p.m.
