BALTIMORE, Md. - The top-ranked Maryland women's lacrosse team will meet the second-ranked Virginia Cavaliers for the third time this season on Sunday to claim stake to the 1999 NCAA Championship trophy, a feat the Terps have claimed the last four national titles.
It marks the second straight year the two teams will vye for the title.
Maryland advances to Sunday's championship game following its 17-13 victory against the fourth-seeded Penn State Nittany Lions.
The Terps, winners of their last 27 games, improve to 20-0 overall, and if they should win on Sunday, would become the third team in Maryland women's lacrosse history to post an undefeated record.
The 1995 and 1996 teams both ran the table, posting 19-0 and 17-0 records, respectively.
It was another record-setting game for Maryland sophomore Jen Adams, as she scored six points (4G-2A) to become Maryland's all-time single-season points leader, breaking former Terp Kelly Amonte's record of 110 points she scored in 1993 and 1996. Adams' six points tonight move her season total to 112, including 67 goals and 45 assists.
The Terps fell behind early, finding themselves trailing 6-2 at the 24 minute mark after Penn State's Jenn Webb scored two goals within a six-minute time span. However, the Terps stay focused and stuck to their gameplan and eventually would come back to tie the score at the 11:08 mark off of a Kristin Sommar (North Wales, Pa.) goal, her second of three in the first half. The Terps eventually took a 9-8 lead at the 9:48 mark after Adams converted off of a free position opportunity. The score would remain 9-8 at half.
Penn State quickly tied the contest after the break, as Collen O'Brien scored the Lions' goal at the 28:18 mark in the second half. Maryland junior Christie Jenkins answered at the 27 minute mark off an assist from Sommar.
Maryland then would accumulate a 7-4 run to secure the victory as Jenkins would knot all three of her goals during that time. Penn State's Jennifer Johnson scored at the buzzer to end the game.
Sophomore Allison Comito (Glen Head, N.Y.) and Sommar each added three goals while sophomore Quinn Carney (Flemington, N.J.) totaled two.
In goal, Maryland's Alex Kahoe had 14 saves while allowing the 13 goals.
Game time for Sunday is set for 3 p.m. at Homewood Stadium on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.
