TERPS AMONG LEADERS AT THE PALMETTO INTERCOLLEGIATE GOLF CLASSIC Kiawah Island, S.C. - At the Osprey Point Golf Course, the Maryland mens golf team shot a five-over par 581 to end the first day of the Palmetto Intercollegiate Golf Classic tied for first with the Univ. of North Carolina-Charlotte. Also in contention are third-place Virginia Commonwealth (+7) and host College of Charleston and the Univ. of Arkansas are tied for fourth-place with a nine-over par.
TERPS OPEN SEASON WITH SECOND-PLACE FINISH -- In their first meet of the season, the Terps recorded a two-above par 866 to finish second out of 15 teams at the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate. Held at the Callaway Gardens Mountainview Course in Pine Mountain, Ga., the Terps recorded round scores of 299, 287 and 280 to place them second behind Mississippi State, which took the team championship with an eight-under 856. The next closest team was host Columbus State, which finished at 11-over par.
UNBELIEVABLE UNIKEL -- Junior Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) has been the driving force behind Maryland golf to date in the fall season. At the G. Gunby Intercollegiate, Unikel took second place after a playoff and finished at five-under par (70-69-72=211). Furthermore, at the Palmetto Intercollegiate Golf Classic, Unikel is currently in a tie for third-place after shooting a three-under 141. He recorded round scores of 70 and 71, giving him five consecutive rounds of par or better.
OTHER OUTSTANDING TERP PERFORMERS -- At the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate, senior Miguel Rivera (Joppa, Md.) finished in a tie for 13th with a three-over par 219, while junior Gary Mankulish (Laurel, Md.) tied for 17th with a four-over par. Also, senior Ed Flowerdews (Falmouth, Me.), seven-over par score earned him a tie for 24th place. Flowerdew is also currently tied for 13th at the Palmetto Intercollegiate Golf Classic after recording a one-over par score of 145.
