COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland head football coach Ron Vanderlinden has named Levern Belin as the school's defensive line coach, it was announced today. Belin replaces former Terrapin coach and NFL standout Rubin Carter, who recently left the college ranks to accept a similar post with the Washington Redskins.
Belin accepted the position after a brief stay at the University of Connecticut where he was named the Huskies' defensive line coach in December. Prior to his Connecticut move, Belin was stationed at Ball State for five seasons where he helped guide one of the top run defenses in the Mid-American Conference. Said Maryland's Vanderlinden, "Levern came highly recommended from several sources with whom myself and my staff are very familiar. He was the overwhelming choice of our coaching staff. Much like the rest of our staff, in addition to being an outstanding football technician, he will also be an outstanding role model for student-athletes."
Belin, who coached the outside linebackers in his first year with the Cardinals, coached the defensive ends for four years through last season. Under Belin's direction, the Cardinals' defensive ends helped the defense rank first in the Mid-American Conference and 34th in the nation in 1997. In addition, Belin helped the Cardinals defense rank second in the MAC in rushing and scoring defense in 1996, while ranking 18th in the nation in scoring defense and 26th in rushing defense. The 1996 team also was 32nd in the country in total defense. The 1995 defense was first in the MAC in passing defense and second in scoring and total defense. Nationally, the Cardinals were fourth in the country in passing and total defense and 15th in scoring defense in 1995. BSU was also third in the MAC and 21st in the nation in rushing defense in 1995.
After his graduation from Wake Forest, Belin spent the 1991 season as a graduate assistant at Boston College, and the 1992 campaign as an assistant at Boston University.
An active member of the National Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Belin was instrumental in organizing a local chapter of the national group while coaching at Boston University. Belin then spent one season at East Tennessee State before coming to Ball State. He began his coaching career as an assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at Pine Crest Prep School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 1988.
