COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The fourth-ranked Maryland Terrapins outscored Vanderbilt 10-2 in the first half, and went on to defeat the Commodores 16-4 in womens lacrosse action this afternoon at Ludwig Field. Senior attack Cathy Nelson scored a career-high five goals while senior Sascha Newmarch assisted on four to give the Terps their sixth straight win.
Maryland would score two quick goals before allowing the Commodores on the board. Nelson and sophomore Christie Jenkins scored at the 21 and 19 minute marks to give the Terps the 2-0 lead. Vanderbilts Michelle Dillow would score at the 16 minute mark. Maryland would then outscore the Commodores eight to one to take a 10-2 lead at the half.
Nelson would score two more goals in the second half while Jenkins notched her third, and the Terps would roll with six goals to end the game. Vanderbilt would net two more goals at the 54 and 56 minute marks but could never erase the Terp lead.
Marylands Alex Kahoe recorded six saves in 55 minutes played, while sophomore Emily Evans recorded three saves and one goal. Vanderbilts Shana Crabtree posted 12 saves.
Maryland had four different multiple-goal scorers on the afternoon, led by Nelsons five.
Maryland closes out its seven-game homestand tomorrow when it hosts Temple at 3 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
