CHARLOTTE (AP) - Surprises in conference tournaments are nothing new. Surprising yourself is a bit unusual.
That's what Wake Forest (8-19) did Thursday in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Charlotte, N.C. The eighth-seeded Demon Deacons turned in their best performance of the season to advance to Friday's quarterfinal matchup with No. 19 Virginia (19-7), the second seed.
Wake Forest shot a season-high 67 percent from the field and made 10-of-15 3-pointers in an 83-66 rout of seventh-seeded Maryland. It was a performance that left even some of the Demon Deacons stunned.
"I have no idea where that came from," Wake Forest's Heidi Coleman said.
The Demon Deacons jumped out to a quick start, taking a 43-32 lead into intermission after hitting 7-of-8 three-pointers in the first half.
"With shooting, sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not," coach Charlene Curtis said. "We hit some shots early and then we gained confidence, and confidence goes a long way on offense."
Maryland had five players in double figures, led by Deedee Warley with 14 points. Branka Bogunovic, Tiffany Brown and Cara Ferris each scored 12, while Kelley Gibson added 11.
The Deacs now advance to Friday's quarterfinal matchup with No. 19 Virginia (19-7), the second seed.
Virginia enjoyed a strong finish to its season. The Cavaliers won four of their last five and 12 of their last 16 games. All four losses came against higher-ranked teams.
The Cavaliers are paced by DeMya Walker, one of the top players in the ACC. Walker paces the team with 15 points, 8.9 rebounds and an ACC-leading 3.0 blocks per game.
Virginia had no trouble against Wake Forest this season, cruising to a 65-45 rout on Dec. 4 and an 81-50 blowout on Jan. 28.
The winner faces either third-seeded North Carolina or No. 5 Georgia Tech in Saturday's semifinals.
