Maryland Sweeps Softball Doubleheader from UMBC

March 31, 1999

Catonsville, Md. - Senior pitcher Kelly Shipman threw her fourth career no-hitter to lead No. 30 Maryland past UMBC, 4-0, in the first game and struck out seven in the second game to lead the Terps to a 6-2 victory in the second game and a doubleheader sweep of UMBC Wednesday afternoon. Shipman struck out 20 batters on the day as she raised her record to 14-10 on the season.

Maryland's record is now 28-16. The Terps are ranked 30th in the most recent USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.

In the first game, Shipman struck out 13 and allowed only four base runners (two walks and two errors). She retired the final 13 batters of the game and did not allow a Retriever to reach base after the third inning. It marked the second time in two years that Shipman had no-hit UMBC. She pitched a perfect game against the Retrievers on Feb. 27, 1998.

Shipman entered the second game in relief of starter Danielle Carpenter. Carpenter earned her sixth victory of the season.

Junior Cortney Madea was the hitting star of game one of the Terps. She was two-for-two with a single and her third home run of the season. Madea is now third all-time at Maryland with seven career home runs.

After scoring one run in the top of the first inning of the second game, the Terps broke open the contest with three runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore shortstop Jen Potzman, sophomore centerfielder Michelle Burrell and Madea each recorded singles and scored runs during the inning. Freshman catcher Beth Radford hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season to close out the scoring in the sixth inning.

Maryland begins an eight date, 14-game homestand on Friday as they play host to Delaware in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the North Softball Complex.
