Women's Lacrosse Falls to North Carolina

March 8, 1998

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--North Carolina's women's lacrosse team scored its biggest victory yet in the program's brief three-year history as a varsity program as the second-ranked Tar Heels upset top-ranked and three-time defending NCAA champion Maryland 10-9 Sunday after at Navy Field.

Carolina, which never trailed in the game, got the winning goal with 2:04 to play as senior midfielder Sarah Dacey broke a 9-9 time when she scored off an assist by junior attackwoman Erin McGinnis. McGinnis had been fouled on the previous play and was given a free position shot. She passed the ball to Dacey on the right edge of the crease and Dacey beat Maryland goalkeeper Alex Kahoe for the winning score. Maryland won the ensuing draw control, but the Terrapins turned the ball over with just over a minute to play. UNC controlled the ball until around the 15-second mark, before turning the ball over deep in the Maryland end of the field. The Terps hurried to move the ball upfield but they were unsuccessful in getting off a shot before time expired. Led by Gray MacNair's three goals and one goal and three assists by Dacey, UNC maintained control of the game for most of the 60 minutes. The Tar Heels never trailed although the Terrapins did rally to tie the game three times, including twice in the first half. However, an explosion in the last 1:06 of the first half staked North Carolina to a 7-4 lead as MacNair scored twice and McGinnis added her only goal in a span of 51 seconds to give the Tar Heels their biggest lead of the game. The Terps, who were led by Quinn Carney's three goals, scored two quick goals in the second half to pull within 7-6 and then the two teams traded the next four goals. Carney's third goal of the game tied the score for the last time with 4:53 left.

Sascha Newmarch finished with one goal and four assists for the Terrapins, while Meredith Egan had two goals and Cathy Nelson had two goals and one assist. Lori Pasquantonio had two goals for UNC and Kristin Off added two assists.

Maryland outshot North Carolina 31-25, but the Tar Heels won the ground ball category decisively 39-20. Both Kahoe for Maryland and UNC's Debbie Castine made 12 saves.

Maryland is now 0-2 on the season and 0-2 in the ACC. North Carolina improves to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the ACC. The Tar Heels play host to Johns Hopkins on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
