PRINCETON, N.J. - Maryland freshman Jen Adams completed a three-point night when she scored the game-winning goal for the visiting Maryland Terrapins with just 53 seconds remaining in the contest, handing the Princeton Tigers a 12-11 loss at the Class of 1952 Stadium on Wednesday evening. Adams spoiled a three-goal effort by Princetons Cristi Samaras, who tied her own school record for points in a season with her 72nd in the second half.
Maryland opened an early 2-0 lead on goals by Christie Jenkins and Quinn Carney, but Princeton rallied for three unanswered scores over the next six minutes to stake a one-goal advantage.
The Terrapins capitalized on another free position opportunity to tie the game as Noelle Mitchell found the net off a pass from Cathy Nelson for the first of her three goals on the day. Maryland scored on four of its 12 free-position chances in the contest, while Princeton was just one-for-five in that category.
Princeton then began another run of its own, and opened a three-goal advantage. That lead was trimmed, however, to 6-5 heading into the intermission, as Maryland notched two goals in the final 1:06 of the first half. The Terrpains tied the game early on in the second, but the Tigers regained the lead on goals by Cristi Samaras and Tice Burke which set the score at 8-6.
It was after these tallies, though, that Maryland took control of the game and forced the action into the Tigers defensive zone. The Terrapins outscored Princeton 6-3 in the final 25 minutes and took advantage of several mistakes by the young Tiger club to steal the one goal victory.
In goal, Marylands Alex Kahoe made eight saves.
Maryland travels to Loyola College on Sunday, May 3 to close out its 1998 regular-season schedule.
