UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State disposed of Maryland in three games to win the Penn State Classic and extended its NCAA record for consecutive home wins to 60. The Nittany Lions needed only 70 minutes to move to 4-1 on the season with the 15-5, 15-5, 15-4 win.
The Nittany Lions dominated at the net, knocking down 14 blocks and holding Maryland to a .059 hitting percentage. Senior Lauren Cacciamani was a big reason the Terps' struggles as she totaled nine blocks, including three solo. Only Maryland's Beth Murphy was effective, tallying a match-high 13 kills and 11 digs.
"I thought we played both matches very well," Rose said of the Saturday wins over Bradley and Maryland. "Our passing was solid and Bonnie (Bremner) was putting the ball in better position. It's nice to see Katie (Schumacher) blocking and hitting the ball better."
Three Lions were named to the all-tournament team: Cacciamani, Bonnie Bremner and Amanda Rome. Bradley's Abigail Kohnen and Samantha Hardwick, as well as Maryland's Murphy, were also selected. Rome was named the Most Valuable Player after hitting .345 (18k-2e-46ta) with five assists, 23 digs and five blocks (1 BS, 4 BA) in the three matches.
"Amanda does so many of the intangible things very well," Rose commented. "She is a natural leader. I think it's appropriate that she was named the MVP."
Bremner's sets went to six different individuals as she collected 23 assists. Schumacher led the Lions with eight kills, while Cacciamani and Nadia Edwards each added six. Rome (5), Bremner (4), Carrie Schonveld (4) and Robyn Guokas (2) also added kills.
It wasn't a good trip for Akron, whose football and volleyball teams left town without a win. The Zips went 0-3 in the tournament after a pair of tough losses Saturday. After a three-game sweep to Penn State Friday night, it was Maryland that handed Akron a 16-14, 15-10, 10-15, 15-11 loss.
Three Terrapin players posted double-digit kills, led by freshman Carey Brennan. Sophomore Libby Alberts contributed 65 assists in the win. Akron sophomore Ashlie Case and senior Kim Schaper tallied 21 kills and 55 assists, respectively, in the losing effort.
Bradley wrapped up the Penn State Classic with a grueling come-from-behind win over Akron. The Zips took the first two games 15-7, 15-11, but struggled to close out the win. The Braves fought back to win 15-8, 15-10, 15-10 and close out the Classic with a 2-2 record.
Senior attacker Abigail Kohen led the Bradley comeback with 31 kills and had help from freshman setter Amelie Rodrigue, who notched 34 assists in the match. Zips' Case contributed 18 kills Schaper racked up 55 assists in the defeat.
The Lions continue their nine-match home stand against West Virginia on Monday. The Labor Day match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in Rec Hall.
