COLUMBUS, Ga. - Seniors Gary Mankulish (Laurel, Md.) and Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) were supposed to lead the Terrapin golf team this season. After two rounds in the opening tournament, they are.
Mankulish (70-73-143) and Unikel (70-73-143) both shot identical rounds to finish the first day of competition at 1-under, five strokes behind John Campbell (71-67-138) of host Columbus State at the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate at Callaway Gardens Resort. Mankulish and Unikel are tied in fourth place entering today's final 18 holes, locked with Jeff Curl (71-72-143) of UNC Charlotte and four strokes back of second place contenders, Jedd McLuen (71-68-139) of College of Charleston and Alex Rocha (70-69-139) of Mississippi State.
Maryland (587, +11), competing for the first time since ending its 1999 spring season with a 19th-place finish at the NCAA East Regional, is riding the coattails of its seniors while holding a fourth-place standing entering Sunday's final round. Maryland trails Virginia Tech (586, +10) and UNC Charlotte by just one stroke in team standings, and is just two strokes out of the lead behind front-running College of Charleston (585, +9). The top six teams are separated by just four strokes.
Sophomore junior college transfer Phillip Fenstermaker (Rockville, Md.) shot a 75 in both rounds on Saturday to place 32nd with a 6-over 150. Five strokes back are freshman John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) and Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.), a sophomore transfer from Baylor. Fenstermaker, Moheyer and Brigham all are representating Maryland for the first time under ninth-year head coach Tom Hanna.
The Terrapins were a second-place finisher to Mississippi State in last year's fall opener at Callaway Gardens.
