MARYLAND vs. WAKE FOREST
Game Notes
Byrd Stadium * College Park, Md.
Maryland 37, Wake Forest 7
* With its 37-7 win over Wake Forest, Maryland moved its record to 3-4 on the season, 1-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Demon Deacons fell to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the ACC. It was Maryland's second straight win in the series with Wake Forest. The Terrapins lead the series 35-13-1.
* The Terrapins shut out the Demon Deacons in the first half to mark the first scoreless half by the defense this season.
* The Deacs ended Maryland's shutout hopes on an 18-yard, 4th-and-2 scoring strike from James MacPherson to Fabian Davis, with 6:07 remaining in the contest. For Davis, it was his first TD reception of the season. For MacPherson, it was the first passing TD of his career.
* The Maryland defense allowed a season-low 72 rushing yards to the Deacons on Saturday.
* The Terps registered season-highs with 232 rushing yards and 24 first downs. Mukala Sikyala ended the game with 112 rushing yards, a career-high on just 14 carries. With LaMont Jordan's 86 yards rushing on only 10 carries, Maryland nearly placed two players over the century mark for the first time since 1997.
* Wake Forest carried 30 times for 72 yards. The Terps ran 42 times for 233 yards.
* Junior safety Randall Jones gave the Terrapins a 30-0 lead on a 90-yard interception return. It was the longest interception return by a Maryland player since Eddie Tomlin scored on a 97-yard return at Michigan on Sept. 30, 1989.
* For Jones, it was his fourth career touchdown, but his first on the defensive side of the ball. Jones played quarterback as a true freshman, and on both sides of the ball as a sophomore.
* Senior Mukala Sikyala, who started at tailback in place of LaMont Jordan, rushed for a career high 112 yards on 14 carries. He surpassed his previous career high of 50 yards (on six carries vs. Temple in `99) on the Terps' first drive of the day as he rushed four times for 52 yards and a 13-yard TD.
* Sikyala is the first Maryland running back besides LaMont Jordan to rush for 100 yards in a game since Randall Jones rushed for 115 yards as a true freshman quarterback at Duke in 1998.
* Jordan broke loose on a 44-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to make the score 37-0. Jordan's touchdown came on his 11th play from scrimmage against the Demon Deacons. That play broke the Maryland record for career all-purpose attempts. Jordan's 789 attempts (rushing and receiving) are the most in Maryland history.
* Senior placekicker Brian Kopka booted a 47-yard field goal against the Demon Deacs to match the longest field goal of his career.
* Redshirt freshman Mike Whaley blocked a Wake Forest field goal midway through the third quarter. It was the first blocked kick of Whaley's career, and the first blocked field goal by a Terrapin since Oct. 30, 1999 when Kris Jenkins blocked a field goal against Duke. Overall, it was the Terps' second blocked kick of the year, including a blocked punt against Middle Tennessee State.
* A pair of Terps scored their first career touchdowns on Saturday against Wake Forest. Redshirt freshman tight end Jeff Dugan's 10-yard TD reception in the second quarter was the first scoring catch of his career. Junior running back Marc Riley scored on a one-yard plunge in the third quarter, marking his first college score, also.
* Maryland recorded three interceptions on the day, all with long returns: Randall Jones, 90 yards for a touchdown, Tyrone Stewart, 35 yards, Curome Cox, 22 yards. For Cox, a redshirt freshman, it was his second interception of the season, matching senior Shawn Forte for the team lead. For Stewart, it was the first of his career.
