What a good two weeks it has been for Maryland Soccer. On top of our two wins last week, we just got two more wins this week. In these past four games we have not given up a goal and have scored on many of our chances. Abe Thompson has stepped up like a seasoned veteran. He is giving us everything we need out of a striker which has led to many good scoring opportunities. Today against William & Mary he scored a goal and had two other shots hit the post. Against Duquesne, everytime he touched the ball you knew something good was going to happen.
Today's game against William and Mary was a crucial win for us. We played an even first half and came out strong to start the second half. The red card to their defender was key as we started to control the flow of play and create more opportunities. Our goal was a result of good defending to win the ball, a nice passing combination, and a strong run and finish from Abe. After we scored it seemed to ignite William and Mary as they started to control play. They were able to hit the crossbar once and hit the post with a few seconds left, but we held on for the win. With the win we continue to rise in the regional rankings and help our NCAA tournament chances. With three regular season games left we need to win at least two of these games to keep our chances alive.
I realized today that this was one of the few home games in my four year career that my parents did not make it for the game. I guess some times I take it for granted that they will be there, but I missed them at the game. Believe me, they made every possible effort to be there, and my dad even saw the first half. I am sure they both would have much rather been at the game than where they were. Apparently I was not the only one who missed them, since many people asked where they were. Not surprisingly, I guess my parents are a big hit at the games. The point when I truly missed them was after the game when I normally run over to talk to them. I usually give my Mom a big hug no matter how dirty and sweaty I am and get a "good game" from my dad regardless of whether I played well or not. My parents kept telling me how upset they were that they couldn't make the game and I kind of blew it off as just another game. But I really understand now how much I appreciate the fact that they come to my games and support me all the time. Not just this season but as long as I have played soccer. I remember my very first soccer practice I cried the whole car ride there. But when it came time to leave my Mom had to drag me off the field. Thank God my Mom didn't turn around, or who knows where I would be today.
