COLLEGE PARK, MD – Head men's soccer coach Sasho Cirovski has announced that Brian Rowland will be promoted to Associate Head Coach following a Big Ten Championship season in 2025.
"We are thrilled to promote Brian Rowland for his outstanding service to Maryland men's soccer" said Cirovski, who will enter his 34th season leading Maryland in 2026. "Brian has played an integral role in the success of our program, and we are excited to continue to help build and maintain Maryland soccer as the elite program that it has become."
Rowland will enter his third season in his second stint with the Terps in 2026, previously serving as the Associate Head Coach from 2015-17. He came back to Maryland in 2024, and this past season helped guide the Terps to an undefeated regular season that saw the Terps finish ranked No. 1 in the final regular-season United Soccer Coaches Poll. Maryland won the Big Ten Championship finishing with an 8-0-2 record in Big Ten play in 2025. The Terps only trailed for a total of 78 seconds throughout their entire undefeated regular season.
During his initial tenure at Maryland, Rowland played a key role in guiding the Terrapins to back-to-back ACC regular-season and tournament championships in 2012 and 2013, while advancing to consecutive College Cup appearances for the first time since 2004 and 2005. The program also captured the ACC Tournament title in 2010, followed by three consecutive Big Ten regular-season (2014–16) and tournament championships (2014–16).
Rowland was also instrumental in laying the foundation for Maryland's 2018 National Championship season.
Between his stints in College Park, Rowland served as head coach at Temple from 2018–22 and spent one season at his alma mater, UMBC, before returning to Maryland.
Under his leadership at Temple, the program achieved significant milestones, including multiple victories over ranked opponents. In the 2020–21 season, Rowland guided the Owls to a 5-4-2 AAC Conference record, highlighted by wins over #2 SMU and #23 Tulsa, and secured the highest postseason seed in program history. In 2019, Temple earned its first-ever AAC Tournament victory and finished the regular season with a program-best national RPI ranking of 37. Beyond team success, Rowland recruited and developed the program's first MLS First Round Draft pick (2020) and its first AAC Player of the Year (2020–21).
"I am deeply grateful to Coach Cirovski, and the Maryland Athletics Department for the opportunity to continue coaching and mentoring our talented student-athletes. Maryland Soccer represents a championship standard, and I look forward to contributing to the program's continued success and pursuit of excellence each season."
A former UMBC goalkeeper, Rowland holds the program's single-season and career shutout records with 11 and 25, respectively. He earned First Team All-Northeast Conference honors during his senior season in 2002. Rowland was inducted into the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.
Following his collegiate career, Rowland continued playing professionally with the Toronto Lynx of the USL (2003–04), the Baltimore Blast and Milwaukee Wave of the MISL (2003–07), and Crystal Palace USA of the USL from 2007 to 2009.
Brian holds a USSF A License (2012) and a US Soccer Technical Director Certification (2024).
Rowland is a native of Toronto, Ontario Canada and earned his bachelor's degree in economics from UMBC in 2003. Brian resides in Severna Park, Maryland with his wife, Sarah and their two children Theodore (4) and Julietta (2).
