
Maryland Men's Lacrosse Hands Out Annual Awards

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland men's lacrosse coach Dick Edell has announced the team's honorees from the 2000 season during the team's annual banquet last week. Eleven players, including six seniors, were given awards for their play during the 2000 campaign, which saw the Terps advance to the 2000 NCAA Quarterfinals.
Van Trump Truitt Award (Outstanding Attackman): Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) - Mollot had a standout freshman year with the Terps, leading the team in scoring. He topped the club with 47 points, including a team-high 32 assists. He was named an honorable mention All-American by College Lacrosse USA.
William Cole Memorial Award (Outstanding Midfielder): Chris Malone (Timonium, Md.) - Maryland's leader in goals with 28, Malone had a super junior season. He finished second on the team in scoring with 39 points. He earned All-ACC accolades following the season along with several All-American honors. He was named a third team All-American by the USILA and College Lacrosse USA. He was also named Maryland student-athlete of the week twice.
Deckman Silber Memorial Award (Outstanding Defenseman): Casey Connor (Baltimore, Md.) - Connor had a stellar year on defense and was named a second team USILA All-American as a senior. He was also named a first team All-American by College Lacrosse USA. A 2000 captain, Connor also played for the South in the North-South All-Star game this past summer.
Faber-Heagy Memorial Award (Unsung Hero): Jason Carrier (Boonton Township, N.J.) and Geoff Burnham (Vestal, N.Y.) - Carrier had a great season on defense, helping the Terps to a 8.63 goals against average. He served as a captain his senior year and started every game of his junior and senior seasons on close defense. Burnham had a strong year as the Terps' top long-stick defensive midfielder. As a senior, Burnham started all 16 games on the face-off wing and scored two goals. He was also honored as the WMAR-TV Scholar-Athlete for the week of April 11, 2000.
Dan Snyder Memorial Award (Most Improved Player): Pat McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) and Andrew `Buggs' Combs (Baltimore, Md.) - This pair of juniors had breakout campaigns in 2000. McGinnis started all 16 games in his year as the Terps' No. 1 goalie. He ranked among the nation's leaders in goals against average (8.55) and save percentage (.616) all season long. He was named All-ACC and named to the ACC All-Tournament team. McGinnis also earned third team All-American honors from College Lacrosse USA. Combs emerged as one of the Terps' top offensive guns. He finished second on the team in goals with 22. He was named ACC Player of the Week on March 20 and named to the ACC All-Tournament team.
Edwin Powell Memorial Award (Career Contribution): Jeff Shirk (Boonton Township, N.J.) and Brian Zeller (Forest Hill, Md.) - This pair of senior captains completed their careers giving their all to the Maryland program. Shirk, recognized as one of the nation's premier shirt-stick defensive midfielder, started all 16 games and provided great leadership. He has been touted as one of the nation's hardest hitters by the Baltimore Sun. Zeller came back from an early season slump to finish with 17 goals and 16 assists for 33 points. He completed his Maryland career with 110 points. He was named ACC Player of the Week on May 1 and was named to the ACC All-Tournament team.
Larry Levitt Memorial Award (Outstanding Freshman): Michael Howley (Wantagh, N.Y.) - Howley had a marvelous freshman campaign in College Park. He was named ACC Rookie of the Year as he helped Maryland's defense to an 8.63 goals against average. He started all 16 games on close defense and provided solid play in front of Pat McGinnis all season.
Scholar-Athlete Award: Marcus LaChapelle (Severna Park, Md.) - LaChapelle finished his senior season with 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points. He complied 66 points in his four-year career. After his senior season, he was named a Academic All-District first team member, majoring in biological sciences. He was also honored as the WMAR-TV Scholar-Athlete for the week of March 31, 2000.
The University of Maryland's 2001 men's lacrosse schedule begins on Feb. 24 as the Terps make their first ever trip to Denver to take on Air Force. The home opener is slated for March 4 against Duke, in a game that will be televised live on WMAR-TV at 1 p.m.
