COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland athletic director Deborah A. Yow today announced that head football coach Ron Vanderlinden has been released of his duties and that a national search for his successor will begin immediately.
"After a comprehensive review of the football program, it has been determined to be in the best interests of the university to make a change at this time," said Yow. "We appreciate the many positive contributions Coach Vanderlinden made to this program during his four-year tenure. However, a change of leadership was determined to be necessary in order for the Maryland football program to reach its potential."
Said Vanderlinden, "I understand that these decisions are based on wins and losses. Unfortunately, we were unable to produce a winning record the last two seasons when we were so close. My biggest regret is that we return the majority of our team, and will have experience and quality depth at most every position. I know that a solid foundation has been laid, and I'm sorry that I won't be here to be a part of the future success.
"I have enjoyed my time here at Maryland and have met many wonderful people and have had many positive experiences. I wish the University, the football program and my successor the very best."
A screening committee composed of two university administrators, two athletic department professionals and two faculty members will be formed to conduct a search for a replacement, according to Yow. The group will receive assistance from a professional consultant who has expertise in similar searches.
Vanderlinden, who was named Maryland's head coach in December 1996, was 15-29 in four seasons.
