College Park, Md. - Maryland's men's soccer team takes the short trip to conference rival Virginia's home of Klockner Stadium this Friday for a crucial game in the scheme of the Terps' NCAA hopes. Maryland is record entering this Friday's match-up is 10-7 (1-4 ACC), while the No. 10 Cavaliers are 12-4-1 (4-1 ACC). The Terps are locked into the No. 6 seed for next week's tournament, with NC State receiving the No. 7 slot. Virginia, however, is still in a fight for the No. 1 seed complete with a bye through the first round. No. 2 North Carolina has completed its ACC action, and sits atop the conference at 5-1. No. 17 Duke and Virginia both enter the weekend's action at 4-1 and have one game each to play. No. 14 Clemson is idle in ACC action with a 3-3 record entering the tournament, with Wake Forest at 2-3 with one game remaining. Gametime in Charlottesville will be 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WMUC, the student station for the University of Maryland. The Terp-Cavalier Series Inside and Out
The Terps' ACC schedule concludes Friday against border-state rival Virginia. Maryland has a 29-20-6 series record against the Cavaliers, most recently losing to the Cavs by a 3-0 margin at the 1999 ACC Tournament. During head coach Sasho Cirovski's six seasons, the series record stands at 2-6-3.

Thompson Extend Streak to Eight Games
Freshman striker Abe Thompson extended his scoring streak to eight games on Saturday when he scored the Terps first goal of the game in Maryland's 3-2 loss to No. 19 Clemson. The streak started on Oct. 4 when Thompson netted his first career hat trick in the Terps' 5-1 victory over Monmouth. He added two more goals against George Mason on Oct. 11, and netted the game-winner on Oct. 14 against Virginia Commonwealth. Thompson's penalty kick helped the Terps orchestrate the upset against No. 21 Loyola on Wednesday, Oct. 25. The talented freshman also assisted the Terps' lone goal against North Carolina on Oct. 7 and added two more assists on Oct. 18 against Duquesne to help string together eight-straight games with at least one point each. Thompson now leads Maryland in scoring with 12 goals and five assists, and has scored 23 points (10 goals, three assists) in the last eight games- an average of over two points per game.

Cirovski Reaches Milestones of 100, 125, 200
In his eighth year at Maryland, head coach Sasho Cirovski won his 100th game with the red, black, white and gold on Oct. 25 against Loyola. He has compiled a 100-57-14 (.626) record at Maryland. A 1985 graduate of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Cirovski owns a 126-69-14 (.636) through his first nine years of head coaching. The Terps' 3-0 win against American on Sept. 27 marked the 200th game Cirovski has coached in his career, and Maryland's 1-0 victory against William & Mary on Oct. 22 stood as his 125th career victory. The win against Loyola made him the second coach in Maryland history to reach the 100-win milestone. Doyle Royal (1946-73), who coached at Maryland for the first 28 years of the program, is the only other head coach with 100 or more victories with the Terps.

Sardis Moves Into Fourth
Senior Jason Sardis (1997-Pres.) joined the career assists list at Maryland last year, and has kept on climbing after rejoining the team just weeks into the 2000 season. Sardis has 20 career assists through the Loyola game, and pulled ahead of Randy Merkel (1996-98) into the No. 4 spot. The No. 3 spot belongs to Shane Dougherty (1993-94) with 21. Keith Beach (1995-98) is Maryland's all-time career assists leader with 35. Junior co-captains Nick Downing and Beckett Hollenbach sit just off the career assist list with 13 and 10, respectively.

COLLEGE PARK, Md.-- Maryland's 1-0 defeat of Virginia on Sept. 12 was the Terps' first home win over the Cavaliers since 1977 when they captured a 4-2 victory over the Cavs. The win was also the first regular-season win against Virginia in the Cirovski era. The last fifteen years, Maryland has opened its ACC schedule with Virginia. This year marked only the second win Maryland has captured in those fifteen ACC openers. Freshman forward Scott Buete scored the only goal of the night at 49:38 to give Maryland its' first ACC win of the season. During the 49th minute, the Terps Jason Cropley served the ball from the right side of the field to freshman A.J. Herrera on the opposite sideline. Herrera then found Buete in front of the goal where he received the pass and booted it past Virginia goalkeeper Kyle Singer for the Maryland score. Virginia had several good chances to tie things up as the clock ticked-away the final five minutes, but the Maryland defense, lead by goalkeeper Christian Lewis would not allow the win to slip away. Lewis had five saves on the night, and recorded his second shutout of the season.

ACC Tournament at Wake Forest

Winston-Salem, N.C.-- The No. 2 seed Maryland Terrapins were upset by the No. 7 seed Virginia Cavaliers 2-0 Thursday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. The loss was the Terrapins first in the quarterfinals since their 4-3 1995 loss to North Carolina. Despite being injury-free for the first time in over a month, Maryland came out to a lackluster start, which Virginia used to build a 2-0 advantage on the higher-seeded Terrapins. Virginia struck first at 4:11 when Sheldon Barnes beat a Maryland defender and found Ryan Trout on the right side of the goal past a drawn-out Christian Lewis for the goal. The Terrapins continued their uninspired play and gave up a second goal at 18:49. It was Barnes who struck again with the header from 20 yards out. The assists were credited to Drew O'Donnell and Steve Totten. The second goal was all the Cavaliers would need. Virginia came at the Terrapins the entire 90 minutes, knowing a win could solidify an NCAA bid for the 11-7-1 Cavaliers. Maryland was out-fouled 34-9, with shots almost even at 7-6, with the Terps holding the slight advantage.
