BALTIMORE - Junior guard Marche Strickland scored 17 of her game-high 19 points in the second half and Maryland used a 15-2 run midway through the half to take control as the Terrapins defeated Loyola, 65-50, in a women's basketball game played at Reitz Arena Tuesday night.

After a poor-shooting first half that saw Maryland take a 22-14 lead at halftime, Loyola's Shontrese Smith scored on a driving layup to tie the game at 31-31 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. But the Terps took control from there. Terri Daniels' three-point shot on the next possession stopped an 8-0 Loyola run, and the Terps (2-0) then scored 12 of the next 14 points to take a 46-33 lead on a Deedee Warley basket with eight minutes left.

Smith had a team-high 16 points for Loyola (1-1), which defeated Maryland in the Terps' last visit to Reitz Arena in 1998. The Greyhounds, who host 15th-ranked Virginia on Saturday, shot just 21-for-62 (33.9 percent) from the field for the game, including 7-for-27 (25.9 percent) in the first half.

Warley added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Maryland, her sixth career "double-double," and second in as many games this season. Rosita Melbourne also had 13 points for the Terrapins, who outrebounded Loyola by a 49-33 margin.

The game was tight early on until Maryland used an 11-2 run midway through the first half to take a 19-10 advantage. The teams combined for 43 turnovers overall, 28 coming in the first half of play.

Senior forward Erica Rath added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds for Loyola, which shot just eight free throws to 31 for the Terps. Sophomore Renneika Razor had a game-high 11 rebounds for Maryland, six coming on the offensive glass
