COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Juniors Lonny Baxter (Silver Spring, Md.) and Marche Strickland (Kingston, Mass.) have been named the Maryland Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances the week of Nov. 20-26.
Baxter, a letters and sciences major, averaged 18.3 points, 7.0 rebounds while recording 10 blocked shots in three games at the Maui Invitational. In the opening-round game against Louisville, the center rejected six shots, setting a new tournament record, while contributing to a team record 10 blocks in the game. He led No. 6-ranked Maryland with 20 points against Dayton and 17 in a semifinal loss to No. 8-ranked Illinois.
Strickland made the game-winning shot with 12.5 seconds left in regulation in a 71-70 victory over Delaware, capturing the Terrapin Classic title. The letters and sciences major averaged 18.3 points in three Terrapin victories this past week. The Terps are off to a perfect 4-0 start, their best since a 9-0 start in 1991-1992.
