COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Four University of Maryland football players have been honored by The Sporting News for their play in the 2000 season.
Seniors LaMont Jordan (Forestville, Md.) and Shawn Forte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) were joined by punter Brooks Barnard (Arnold, Md.) on the publication's All-Atlantic Coast Conference second team selections, while linebacker Mike Whaley (Lexington, S.C.) was chosen as a third team Freshman All-American.
Whaley finished the 2000 season sixth on the team and led all freshmen in tackles with 68. He was a playmaker for Maryland all year long and finished third on the team in sacks (5 for 47) and tackles for loss (12 for 76).
Jordan finished the year with a team-leading 920 yards and ended his career as Maryland's all-time leading rusher with 4,147 yards. He scored 11 touchdowns in 2000 and went over 100 yards rushing in three of his last four games. Fellow senior Forte was fourth on the team in tackles (82), led the Terps in interceptions (4) and finished his career tied for 12th all time with nine picks.
Barnard finished the season ranked fourth in NCAA Division I-A in punting with a 44.7-yard average. His average was the best in Terp history, topping Scott Milanovich's 43.8-yard effort in 1993. His season also included 12 punts over 50 yards and one - 85 yards - that was three yards shy of a school record.
Barnard and Jordan were each honored earlier in the week by the ACC as Barnard was an honorable mention and Jordan was a second team All-ACC selection.
