COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
A school-record seven home games - including Atlantic Coast Conference matchups with North Carolina, Clemson, Virginia and Duke - highlight the University of Maryland's 2001 football schedule, announced today by the ACC office.
The Terps, who have never played as many as seven games at home in a season during the modern era, also host non-conference games against traditional rival West Virginia, Eastern Michigan and Troy State. All four of Maryland's road games - vs. Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Florida State and NC State - will be against ACC opposition.
The Sept. 1 season opener at Byrd Stadium vs. North Carolina marks the earliest ACC opener in school history, and will feature first-year head coaches in Maryland's Ralph Friedgen and Carolina's John Bunting. Following the Carolina game, Maryland will play back-to-back home games against non-conference opponents Eastern Michigan (Sept. 8) and West Virginia (Sept. 15) before returning to ACC action in a Sept. 22 road game vs. Wake Forest.
Maryland will play its final non-conference game of the season Sept. 29 when Division I-A newcomer Troy State visits College Park. Following the Troy State game, Maryland will return to ACC action for good, with the second half of the season featuring an even balance between home and road games. The Terps will host Virginia (Oct. 6), Duke (Oct. 20) and Clemson (Nov. 10) while traveling to Georgia Tech (Oct. 13), Florida State (Oct. 27) and NC State (Nov. 17).
Maryland's 2001 slate never has the Terps on the road for consecutive weekends. The Terrapins also will have a bye weekend Nov. 3, which comes in between matchups with Florida State and Clemson, which finished first and tied for second, respectively, in the ACC this past season.
