College Park, Md. - Maryland's women's basketball team pulled ahead early and stayed in control the entire game as the Terps (7-2) dominated Coppin State (2-6) 73-42 at Cole Field House. Junior transfer Jamecca Harrell (Oxon Hill, Md.) led Maryland with 16 points off the bench, while sophomore Terri Daniels (Ellicott City, Md.) dished out a career-high 12 assists.
"We were just putting the ball in the basket," commented Daniels on the Terps 24 team assists on 28 made field goals. "We play team ball - we're all in it together. We just look for each other and put the ball in the basket."
The Terps jumped out first, with sophomore Renneika Razor (New York, N.Y.) earning the starting spot and putting Maryland on the board 40 seconds into the game. Razor scored eight of the Terrapins' first 10 points, and stretched the early lead to a 10-4 margin. She finished the night with 13 points and eight rebounds.
"The way you practice is the way you play in the game. If you don't make the lay-ups in practice, you're not going to make them in a game. It all starts there," said Razor of her four-for-five shooting from the floor in the opening five minutes.
The opening half was all Maryland, as the Terrapins' defense held Coppin State to 22% shooting from the floor (6-27) and just 13 first-half points. The Terrapins shot an exceptional 15-24 (62.5%) in the first half from the floor, and jumped out to the 22-point halftime lead.
Coppin State's leading scorer, Keisha Brooks attempted to close the gap in the second half with her 12-point performance, but to no avail as Maryland posted another 38 points en route to the 29-point win. Brooks ended the game with 15 points and 9 rebounds, one short of her fifth double-double of the season. The Terps won the battle of the boards 52-37, and shot 50% for the game.
Maryland has the next 10 days off from game action for final exams. The Terps next host Lafayette on Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m. before heading to California on Dec. 26 for a two-game stint.
