COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland head football coach Ralph Friedgen announced today that he is retaining James Franklin as wide receivers coach. Franklin served in that same capacity for the 2000 season.
Franklin, 28, joins running backs coach/recruiting coordinator Mike Locksley as the second coach to have been retained from the previous staff. In addition to Locksley, he joins recent hirees Charlie Taaffe (offensive coordinator), Gary Blackney (secondary) and Dave Sollazzo (defensive tackles) as additions to the Friedgen staff.
The 2000 season was Franklin's first with the Terrapins after spending single seasons with Idaho State (1999), Washington State (1998), James Madison (1997), East Stroudsburg (1996) and Kutztown (1995). He is a 1995 graduate of East Stroudsburg where he was a Harlon Hill nominee for Division II Player of the Year.
Under Franklin's tutelage, the Terrapins got a breakout performance in 2000 from junior Guilian Gary who had 40 receptions for 568 yards and seven touchdowns. The seven TDs tied for fourth-most in a single season in school history, joining current Baltimore Raven Jermaine Lewis, among others.
"I've been very impressed with James Franklin and the way he has recruited," said Friedgen. "He is a good, young coach who has a great future in this business."
