Maryland Women's Basketball Puts Up Fight Against No. 13 Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Lisa Shepherd scored 26 points and Kelly Mazzante had 21 as No. 13 Penn State beat Maryland 95-86 on Tuesday night.

Penn State (4-3) led 72-56 on Mazzante's layup, but Maryland (6-1) - aided by 14 Penn State fouls in the second half - used a 19-6 run to make it 77-78 with 3:42 left.

Penn State's Maren Walseth had a three-point play, and Mazzante had consecutive baskets to put the Lady Lions up 85-78 with 1:40 left. Walseth finished with 16 points, and Rashana Barnes had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Deedee Warley led Maryland with 16 points, and Jamecca Harrell had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Penn State never trailed, and Maryland's only tie was at 2-2. Maryland pulled to 24-23, but Mazzante stole the ball on consecutive possessions for Penn State, scoring on a jumper and passing to Lisa Shepherd for a 3-pointer that made it 29-23.

The Lady Lions used a 7-1 run at the end of the half to take a 45-34 lead.

Maryland's 6-0 start was the team's best since the 1991-92 season. The Terrapins started 9-0 that season on the way to a 25-6 finish.
