COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland head football coach Ralph Friedgen announced today that he is retaining Mike Locksley as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. Locksley has served in that same capacity for the past four years.
Locksley, 30, was instrumental in the development of all-time leading rusher LaMont Jordan and Maryland's subsequent rise as one of the better rushing teams in the ACC. The Maryland rushing attack was tops in the conference in 1999, just two seasons after finishing ninth in that category. In addition, his work in helping put together the 2000 recruiting class was ranked among the nation's top 25 by one analyst.
Locksley joins recent hirees Charlie Taaffe (offensive coordinator), Gary Blackney (secondary) and Dave Sollazzo (defensive tackles) as the first additions to the Friedgen staff.
"Mike Locksley has done an outstanding job here as a running backs coach -- he coached an outstanding player in LaMont Jordan -- but I think he is indispensable as far as the contributions he has made in recruiting and holding this program together," said Friedgen. "I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to retain him on our staff."
