Coach Ron Vanderlinden Comments on the 2000 Recruiting Class
"As with every area of our program, our goal is to continually improve and upgrade Maryland football. The 2000 recruiting class is another illustration of the improvement we continue to make. I am very pleased with the balance in this class and our ability to meet many of the specific personnel needs we had in our program."
Quarterback
"Obviously we are extremely excited to have someone with Chris Kelley's talent coming to Maryland. Statistically, you can see where he is an accomplished passer as well as an accomplished runner and playmaker. I look for great things from Chris Kelley. Chris expressed to me that he chose Maryland because it is his state university. Chris's goal is to be the quarterback that leads Maryland to an ACC championship. We were not looking to sign a junior college quarterback. One of our assistant coaches, Mike Gundy, had the task of prospecting junior colleges nationwide in search of specific needs. During his search, he uncovered Shaun Hill. As a former quarterback and quarterback coach himself, he thought Shaun was an outstanding prospect. He then transferred the tape to offensive coordinator Bob Heffner. Together, the staff analyzed Shaun's tape. When [1999 starter] Calvin McCall informed me in the middle of December of his decision to play basketball, coupled with the inexperience and youth we have at the position, it made sense to recruit Shaun Hill to provide experience and insurance at the quarterback position. Shaun has the size, the athleticism and the passing proficiency we look for. One of the things that was appealing about Shaun is that he played in an offense at Hutchinson CC that is very similar to the offense we run."
Tailback
"Chris Downs, who has played the past two years at Valley Forge Junior College, provides us with experience. He is a quick, slashing runner -- much like sophomore-to-be Bruce Perry -- and is also very thick and tough, much like Bruce. The style of Chris Downs and Bruce Perry is a good complement to the bigger backs in our offense."
Fullback
"James Lynch has been to the Maryland campus at least 25 times in the last year. Like many of the players we signed, we had an opportunity to work with James in our summer camp. He has excellent hips and deceiving speed. He gives us an outstanding fullback for the future. He should be good with his hands on the ball, as well as a dominating blocker."
Tight End
"Ryan Flynn was one of the top two tight ends we set our sights on early in the recruiting process. He is a very physical blocker with outstanding size potential. He also possesses good receiver skills, although his high school was a dominant run team."
Offensive Line
"We set our goal at 3-4 offensive linemen. Kyle Schmitt was one of the most highly ranked linemen in the state of Pennsylvania. He also is a highly rated basketball player, which speaks to his agility and movement. Reggie Kemp, Lou Lombardo and C.J. Brooks all have outstanding size and potential. Along with Kyle, they all project to be outstanding offensive linemen."
Wide Receiver
"One of our top priorities was to recruit wide receivers with size. We accomplished this by signing Maurice Shanks and Rob Abiamiri, both of whom are in the 6-3, 6-4, range. Both are athletic, fluid and have good ball skills."
Athletes
"Steve Suter is good with his hands on the ball. Last year, Steve was the fastest player at the Maryland football combine. Every coach whose team played against Steve had a story to describe his tremendous ability to make big plays in the open field. Steve can play running back, wide receiver or corner. Ray Custis suffered a season-ending knee injury as a junior, but he too has outstanding speed and hips, and displays toughness. Ray could possibly be a running back or a corner. Ike Roberts is fluid as a wide receiver and physical as a defensive back. We will look at him on both sides of the ball before making a decision."
Defensive End
"C.J. Feldheim, like Jon Condo, was a defensive end/fullback in high school. He has displayed speed, agility and toughness. He has the frame to add the weight to develop into a good ACC defensive end. Jamahl Cochran we discovered while evaluating another player. The other player's coach commented that Morristown, which won the New Jersey state championship, had an outstanding, though undersized, defensive lineman. When our coach watched the tape he immediately liked Jamahl. Our entire staff agreed that although Jamahl is not as big in stature, his performance was such that he immediately rose to the top of our defensive end prospects."
Defensive Tackles
"We offered Chris Earhart after watching his spring practice at Montgomery Junior College. He has outstanding size and should help us solidify the interior of our defense. Cole Boykin is a good football player who was in the top tier of our defensive line recruiting from the moment he was evaluated. He is explosive off the ball, uses his hands well, and plays snap to whistle. Cole also was the vice president of his class and has outstanding leadership characteristics."
Linebacker
"Because of the linebackers we signed a year ago, and also because we did not lose a linebacker to graduation, we felt we only needed to sign 1-2 linebackers in this year's class. We identified Chris Linton early in the process as a tall, lean, athletic linebacker with good speed. Chris runs well, bends his knees well, and makes a lot of plays. He projects to be an athletic, physical linebacker that has become a prototype in the '90s at that position."
Rush Linebacker
"Jon Condo, a fullback/linebacker in high school, as well as one of the state of Pennsylvania's top heavyweight wrestlers despite his weight, displays body control, suddenness, natural strength as well as toughness. Jon is an athletic, explosive player who hopefully will add to our pass rush. Kevin Eli is one of the special recruits in this year's class. He is an outstanding basketball player, averaging nearly 30 points per game, and should develop into an outstanding pass rusher."
Safety
"This is another position that we were not actively looking to fill. We were so impressed with Curtis Williams on tape that we actively recruited him and set him up for a visit. He immediately put us up at the top of his list. I felt as if he was too good of a prospect not to bring to Maryland. He has size, speed and is a very physical hitter."
Cornerback
"Dennard Wilson is a great example of an unheralded junior who had an outstanding senior season at DeMatha High School, one of the nation's top programs. He is both athletic and physical at the corner position."
