College Park, Md. - Former Maryland defender Dan Califf (Orange, Calif.) was drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy today in the MLS Super Draft as the sixth overall pick. The 6-1 center back led a Maryland defense that was second in the ACC in scoring defense (0.89 gpg) and second in shutouts with nine during the 1999 season.
UCLA's Steve Shak was the first overall pick by the MetroStars. Nick Garcia (Indiana), Adin Brown (William & Mary), Carlos Bocanegra (UCLA) and Aleksey Korol (Indiana) were the next four selections in the draft. Garcia was taken by the Kansas City Wizards, Brown by the Colorado Rapids, Bocanegra by Chicago and Korol by Dallas. Califf's selection by his hometown Los Angeles Galaxy was the sixth selection overall in the first round, made up of college graduates and Project-40 signees like Califf.
A third-team NSCAA All-American this past season, Califf had two goals for the Terps who were ranked in the top ten most of the season, even receiving the program's first No. 1 ranking ever from Soccer America. Maryland reached the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive year in 1999, and finished the year at 14-6 overall. Califf decided leaves the Terps with three goals and three assists for his career.
Additionally, D.C. United obtained the #41 overall pick from Miami in exchange for the rights to Maryland alum Keith Beach (D.C. United's second round college pick in 1999) and D.C. United's fourth-round pick in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft.
